As I’m sure everyone can understand…life has been busy, crazy and wonderful the last 2 weeks. Reed is 2 weeks old today and I can finally understand why all new moms talk about how time flies once baby makes his appearance. I can not believe he has been here two whole weeks, and even more amazing is that he wasn’t due until this past Sunday, March 15th. These past two weeks would have been SO much slower if he wasn’t here!!
We have had many funny things happen, taken hundreds of pictures, and a few firsts that should be shared.
The first bath was a comedy of errors. The nurses in the hospital are amazing. Every night they would take Reed from me and give him a bath. When he came back to me he smelled lovely and was in a wonderfully sweet mood. The same did not happen when we gave him his first bath at home. We took him into our bathroom because it has the most counter space. I laid him on his back on top of his towel to start sponge bathing him. Of course, as soon as Randy took off his diaper he peed all over me and his towel. So towel 1 was toast. The bath commenced and he screamed. Randy grabbed the clean and unhappy baby in a new baby towel to take him to the changing table in our room for a new diaper. About 3 steps from the bathroom Reed pooped all over Randy and the new towel. All we could do was look at each other and laugh. The most unfortunate part is that we didn’t get pictures of any of it. It took both of us just to keep him safe, so we didn’t have any extra hands to snap pictures.
The next big first was our first trip to the pediatrician. We have chosen to see the same doctor I went to as a child. Not only do I love Dr. Purnell, but my mom worked in the office for many years when I was very young so she came with us to the first appointment. It was like old home week for her. She was chatting with all her nursing friends and it was great to see Dr. Purnell again. Thankfully Reed did great and at 6 days old he was one ounce shy of his birth weight. One other great thing about mom being with us is that she took pictures. (As usual, Randy will have to post those later)
Thankfully, Reed is generally a happy baby. We certainly have our tough nights and our good nights, but for the most part he is happy. Most importantly, we love him to pieces. His natural expression looks like a grumpy old man and it cracks me up all the time. I hope the grumpiness fades in time, but for now it is hilarious.

Great update! Thanks for sharing – he’s so adorable! That little wrap shirt looks very familiar – I think Ben wore that set for the first 6 weeks! Sounds like he is growing well and you guys are adjusting great to the craziness of a newborn. We are so happy for you. One thing that helped us at first for baths was running a space heater in the bathroom at first to heat it up. That way Ben was content laying naked on the counter for a long time during his sponge bath. After 2 weeks though, you probably have this all down pat! I can’t believe he is 2 weeks already!

Love the bath story. I was talking to my friend the other day who just brought home her third baby marveling at the fact that she’s been bathing him alone. Jim and I still make it a 2 person job! I’m sure either of us could do it alone now but at first it truly seemed like all four hands were needed. We actually read step by step instructions as we gave Kate her first bath, what nerds! The best is that Jim’s parents sat back and watched without saying a word but got it all on tape.
You’ll be amazed how quickly you become an old pro at all this, glad to hear you guys are doing well!
oh you guys he is just too cute! i am so happy for y’alls little family! isn’t it glorious?!! we would love to come and meet him for 10 seconds (minus our children of course) and bring y’all some dinner since you have your hands full 🙂
and, oh, don’t you just love Dr. Purnell?! he was my pediatrician too! he is great, calm, layed back but very real. and he doesn’t talk to you like you are an idiot which is a BIG plus.

Hilarious bath story! If only I could count the number of times fecal matter has been outside it’s appropriate realm! I keep looking at these pics and I think he may be the first baby I’ve seen that looks like the mom at such an early age. I have a theory that all babies look like their dads at birth, but Reed is giving me a run for my money with that blond hair and something about the mouth. I can’t wait to watch him grow!
You’ll start seeing his personality come out, then his first smile for you, then giggling.
The grumpiness baseline definitely helps us appreciate their development even more:-)
