Reed’s 3rd Birthday Party
Randy posted some pictures from Reed’s party, and then I never wrote any text. Sorry about that.
I have the hardest time throwing parties for Reed because I still have no idea what to do with boys. I had been asking Reed for weeks and weeks what he wanted for his birthday party. All he ever said was that he wanted a blue party…with pink. It was rodeo time in San Antonio and we had been doing lots of cowboy/boots/horses things, so I decided to make it a cowboy party. My favorite thing about the party was the food. It was the easiest (and probably cheapest) food I have ever done for a party because it was all done in advance. I made slow cooker pinto beans, and then the next day turned the beans into baked beans (this was my first time to make pintos from scratch and they turned out great!). Then I made pulled pork sandwiches (again, in the slow cooker the day before). Reed has decided he LOVES coleslaw (seriously, who IS this kid??) so I made some of that too. The fun part was that I served the meal in aluminum pie tins.
The desserts included cow patties (Oreos covered with brownie), individual s’mores and a cow cake. Reed couldn’t get enough of the s’mores. I think I will be making those again, they were so fun and so portable.
Decorations were simple but fun. I used cowboy hats and bandanas, that were also favors, to decorate the dining room wall. Table tops were covered with burlap and this lovely blue paisley fabric that I found. I used mason jars filled with sand from the sand pit and white candles. I also used some purple flowers from the awesome mountain laurels trees in the neighborhood to fill mason jars for the centerpieces.
The weather was horrible for his party, so we didn’t get to play outside at all. I had ideas about stick horse races, or something with bubbles…but it didn’t happen. It was storming and freezing cold, so we stayed inside and just played. We did pull out the racetrack from Reed’s second birthday and it was a hit again.
We had a great time at Reed’s party this year. Hopefully next year he will give me a little more input besides ‘a blue party’.
Ali’s Birthday Party details
So I LOVED planning this party. I have always struggled to plan a cute party for Reed and now I know why…I am not a boy. When it comes to girly fun parties I have more ideas than I can possibly carry out. I almost wish I had waited to do this theme for her when she is a little older. I had so many ideas of fun crafts to have and paint the party guests toenails, etc. Maybe I will get lucky and Ali will love rainbow colors as much as I do and we will be able to do it again someday.
Here are the details:
1. Invitation – purchased off of Etsy. I bought her cupcake onesie from Etsy and my mom made her second onesie with the ‘1’ in ruffled fabric. I love both of them so much. The only reason I even bought the cupcake one is because it was long sleeved and the party was in January.
2. Decorations. The Balloon wreath was the star of the show. I seriously LOVE this wreath. It turned out so much cuter than I had expected. I found the idea on Pinterest and then went with it. I can’t wait to pull out the birthday wreath every year in January and again in March. Other decorations were just a hurricane full of balloons, rainbow fabric on the dessert table, and punchouts of a rainbow paper to decorate the food table. I had brightly colored plates and silverware to finish out the (super easy) rainbow theme.
3. The cake. This cake was the inspiration for the whole party. I saw it on a blog and completely fell in love with it. It just makes me SO happy to look at it. I made lots of modifications to the original cake which included baking only half layers of each color. I wanted to have all the colors, but didn’t want a wedding cake for 30 guests. My second big change was to color the icing to match the cake and not frost the outside. I love that you can see all the colors of cake and icing without even cutting into it. I also made some chocolate covered oreos that I colored to match the cake. (That’s the only sweets Reed would even touch. That boy does not like sweets!)
4. Food. The food was typical Julie food. Cheese 7 cracker tray, turkey/provolone/chive cream cheese rollups, Homemade 7 layer dip, rainbow goldfish and rainbow fruit kabobs with a lime mint syrup. I tried to make kid friendly food that was dressed up a little so grown ups would enjoy it too. The party was at 3pm so I didn’t plan to serve a full dinner, just snacks.
5. Since this was a 1 year old party I didn’t mess with colored drinks. We just had soda, beer, wine and juice boxes.
6. Party favors were brightly colored sand pails filled with simple play things. I had some glow in the dark bracelets, plastic bracelets, a book, a princess wand, a tube of play doh, and a wooden car. Every little girl needs to play with cars, right?
All in all, this was one of my favorite parties ever. The mix of guests was perfect, the time of day was perfect, the weather was lovely, the birthday girl had a wonderful time playing with her friends and opening presents…and I had fun prepping. All the ingredients for a fantastic afternoon!!

Alison’s First Birthday Party
Ali’s first birthday party was a delightful hit. I’d say it went off without a single hitch. Julie loves planning birthday parties for the kids, but I think this one was her favorite. She kept talking about how happy all the colors made her.
The theme was “rainbow”, and that assimilated itself most obviously in the cake and desserts. Julie made a rainbow-colored layer cake, where each layer was baked individually and colored. What came out was both beautiful and tasty!
As for the Birthday Girl, she was in the best mood the entire afternoon. We strategically timed the party for late afternoon, when she is at her best (when fully rested). She had a great nap and we fed her as soon as she woke up. She was primed and ready to be social when everyone came over. Reed, too, got a great nap and was very helpful and compliant for the most part.
*This post was obviously written by Randy and I will write a separate post with party details. I really loved this party and want to share all the fun stuff I did/found.*
Below is a sample of the pictures we took and a video of Ali getting into her first birthday cake (beautifully colored, I might add). Check out the Full Photo Album for more.
Lord, heal our hearts
Thursday afternoon Dr. Lewis Purnell died. He was my pediatrician. He was my mom’s boss for many years. He was the man I chose to care for my children. For all of the people who never met him I am sorry for you. There really aren’t any words to describe how completely amazing he was.
6 weeks ago he was diagnosed with a fairly rare and aggressive form of cancer. He was only given 6 months to live. It was an incredibly painful battle and for that, I am thankful he went quickly. Unfortunately he was young and his youngest child is still in high school. I can’t imagine what his family is going through. I took Alison to him for her 6 month checkup in July and he was fine. That was the last time I saw him.
Dr. Purnell is the type of doctor that didn’t just assess whether or not your child had an ear infection. He would come in the room and take charge (in a good way). He would answer my questions before I could ask them. He not only diagnosed what was wrong but would tell you what to look for if it gets worse, tell you what the baby is feeling, what to expect as it heals or gets worse, how long it should last etc. He would tell me all these things before I could even ask.
At well baby visits he didn’t just give shots, chart growth and tell you nutritional guidelines. He guided you on what you should be doing as a parent in this stage. For example, when Reed was in the office for his nine month checkup Dr. Purnell started coaching me on discipline. Obviously I don’t have any experience with other doctors, but I doubt that all doctors take that kind of time and care with their patients.
His philosophy on raising kids matched perfectly with mine. I don’t like to follow rules just because they are rules. I like to make informed decisions and he completely supported that. For example, I know the guideline was to keep your child rear facing until they were 12 months old (and yes, I know it has changed to 2 years old now). I asked Dr. Purnell his opinion about that when Reed was about 9 months old. His response “yes, it is safest for the child to be rear facing until 12 months. It is also safest for a 40 year old man to be rear facing, but that isn’t very practical.” He told me that he turned his own children when they were 11 months old and that he agreed it was fine for me to do so also. Like I say, I know this isn’t the kind of approach all parents would take, but it was in complete agreement with my parenting attitude.
You wouldn’t believe how much losing my favorite doctor has affected me. I’m at a loss for how to pick a new doctor. I really want to bury my head in the sand and not even try, but that’s not an option. More than anything I hurt for his sweet family. He was such a fantastic leader in the office and an even more fantastic head of his family. He was so full of life and had SO much left to offer this world.
When I laid down to go to sleep on Thursday (Randy was still in the living room) all I kept thinking was that his sweet wife has to lay down alone forever. I don’t want to think about how empty and lost she must feel. (Randy you aren’t allowed to die before me). And her pain is forever. He was her partner, and now she is alone. He won’t be around to walk his daughter down the aisle. He won’t ever hold his grand babies. And what an awesome grandfather he would have been.
One final funny story…when I was a kid (like 10 or so) my mom still worked at Dr. Purnell’s office. My dad is self employed and didn’t have health insurance (don’t ask). He got stung by a bee and it was swelling up and making him nervous. So what did he do? He went to see Dr. Purnell of course!! And of course Dr. Purnell cheerfully treated him and sent him on his way. We still laugh about that one.
I will leave you (after this super long post) with some pictures of Dr. Purnell with my kids. Dr. Purnell I miss you greatly. I can’t think about you and your family without sobbing. I don’t know how this community will continue without you, but I pray you will watch out for my little ones from heaven. And I’m thankful you are dancing pain free up there with Jesus and my sister.
Alison’s Baptism
When we got the notice that our Pastor, Rev. Ryan Barnett, was going to transfer to another church at the beginning of the summer, we jumped on the schedule to baptize Alison before he left. You see, Ryan has been a meaningful friend and Pastor to us, and we didn’t want to let him slip away without doing us the honor of baptizing Ali. Ryan also knows the Alison that our daughter was named for, so it was symbolic for us to have Ryan bring our Alison into the church where we first met her namesake.
The other meaningful element was to have Papa Roy (Rev. Roy Wold) assist in the baptism, just like he did with Reed. It means so much to have him as part of the family, that we want him to be a part of all these events as long as he is around. He is about 96 now and we are blessed every year that he is still with us.
The ceremony went well. Julie had Ali dressed in long white gown that she had purchased months ago. We hope to keep it and pass it on to future girls in the family. Reed behaved himself pretty well through the service and even gave the crowd some laughs when he patted Ali’s head gently and when he kept trying the put the lip gloss on me that he insisted on holding.

Reed’s 2nd Birthday
Cars!!
Reed is in love with anything that moves. Cars, trucks, tractors, trains, planes… and BIG trucks. So, it was a no-brainer when we thought of that for 2nd birthday theme. Julie wanted to make the cake again, which she did such an awesome job on last year.
The only think we needed was some entertainment for few toddlers. Last year it was bubbles, which would have been just a as fun this year, but it doesn’t have much in common with cars. How about building a race track? I give Julie credit for the idea, and it was no-brainer as well. I built a straight track that took me back to the “Pinewood Derby” days in Cub Scouts. I think it was just as fun for me to build and play with as it was for Reed!
We were very fortunate to have a special guest in town for Reed’s birthday as well. Jim and Sarah Pike made the trip with their red-haired daughter, Kate, and 6-week old boy, John. Reed and Kate have been buddies since before they can both remember, and it’s really fun to see them recognize each other now.
We had lots of fun and the track was a hit. Even little Caleb Swayze stepped-out of his shyness to play with the cars on the track.

The most uneventful birth story
I am happy to tell this super uneventful story. We scheduled a C-section for January 11, 2011 back in November. The only wild card in the whole plan was whether or not she would decide to come early. Alison measured a few weeks big for her age at almost every sonogram, so an early appearance was always a possibility. I wanted her to wait as long as possible because everyday she stayed inside was another day away from Christmas for her birthday.
The morning of 1/11/11 we woke up, packed up the truck and dropped Reed off at day care just like it was any other day. Only this day we drove to the hospital, checked in for our 11am surgery and went straight to pre-op. The only eventful part was the anesthesia…
When I delivered Reed I had an epidural. Zero pain, zero problems. For whatever reason this doctor likes to do a spinal tap for ‘elective’ c-sections. I was not prepared for this, which is probably a good thing. Have any of you ever had a spinal tap? I had no idea I could be in that much pain. Seriously. Horrible. It only took a few minutes to get the medicine into my spine, but the whole time I was in horrible pain, plus I was terrified that the doctor was going to mess up and leave me paralyzed. If you are ever given the choice…go with an epidural. Seriously. The only good part about it is that I could feel my legs as soon as I was in recovery. That was nice, but I would still prefer the epidural.
So I get the spinal tap and lay down. Immediately my chest starts burning like the way that I imagine it feels (from Twilight) to be turned into a vampire. My heart is literally on fire like I have never felt before. Not to be too dramatic, but I was afraid something was very wrong. The anesthesiologist assured me my vitals looked good and that everything was fine…but that didn’t take the pain away. I heard one other scary thing when Dr. Vanover (my OB) asked for the vacuum. Yikes!! Turns out I was right about how low she had been. They had to use the vacuum on her little head because she was so lodged into my pelvis that Dr. Vanover couldn’t get a good grip on her to pull her out. Finally I heard what I had been waiting for…’she so chunky!’ I love Dr. Vanover.
Alison was a little chunk, but almost the exact measurements as Reed. She was 8 pounds, 2 ounces and 20 inches long. Reed was 8 pounds 3 ounces and 19.5 inches long. Not to mention she looked JUST like him when she was born. It was like going back in time and seeing Reed’s little face for the first time.
Aggie Football Tailgate 2010
The annual tailgate has changed in persona over the years, and probably the most in the last 2 or 3. Gone are the days of drinking heavily, pitching washers and watching every down of the Aggie game (in person or on TV). This year was a full-blown kidfest, and it’s only the beginning. There were 4 toddlers, an infant, and 4 pregnant mothers!
The game against Mizzou was a blowout loss. It’s probably a good thing that it wasn’t close (or even a win) because most of the dads spent their time chasing and entertaining the toddlers. Scott and I, along with John and Amanda, attempted a game of washers off to the side… but after only 2 turns Scott and I were called back to the front line of duty. (Sorry Amanda!)
I have a feeling these toddler years will be a struggle for any of us to really visit and relax at our annual tailgate. We still look forward to them and enjoy the interaction of our kids for the time being. I promise one day in the future we will again be able to enjoy an entire adult beverage without forgetting where we set it down to chase our kids.

Heights Park
We love our neighborhood and more importantly our street. On Saturday of last week the doorbell rang and there were 5 little girls and a mom on the doorstep. One little girl handed me a handmade invitation to a street party the next evening. Who does that anymore?? It was SO cute.
- This is the new house
- Reed playing in our junk!
- Reed’s new favorite place.
Sunday we loaded Reed into the wagon and took our cooler and my black bean and corn dip 3 houses down to the end of the cul de sac. All the families in our cul de sac were there with their kids and their dogs and lots of food. It was such a fun evening. (Of course we capped it off by bringing out some puppies for everyone to play with.) This street party is an annual event, but the timing made it feel like a welcoming party for us. We finally live on the kind of street where all the neighbors like each other and the kids trade off playing at each other’s houses every day. I can only imagine how the summer will be 🙂
Every night last week about 10 minutes after I got home with Reed I would hear the doorbell ring. Standing outside was a whole group of children that wanted to come in the backyard and play with the puppies. Sometimes they stay for 30 minutes and sometimes their parents have to come looking for them because it’s been an hour or two. Needless to say I am in heaven. I just love our street, our neighbors, and the multitude of children on our street. One family has 10 children (yes, 10), one family has 8, and one family has 4. The rest of us are the normal 1-3 kids.
All these children equal lots of little hands to cuddle and play with the puppies so each one is well socialized, but it also means lots of future babysitters!! Most of the children are older than Reed, but there is one little boy named Jonathon who is only 1 year and 3 weeks older than him. Jonathon was adopted from Russia (by the family with 10 kids). He and Reed have the same coloring and for now look very similar to each other. It’s SO cute! Last night we had the puppies in the front yard to run the sprinkler in the back and we took Reed and Jonathon for a ride around the cul de sac in the wagon. They are at the ‘parralel play’ stage so they just stared at each other. So stinking cute!!! I only wish we had pictures to share…but we had our hands full!!
