Smiles

Reed has been flashing smiles for a while…but I didn’t count it until I thought he was intentionally smiling.  Today was the day.  I put him in his crib this morning for his nap and when he woke up he was happy and kicking his legs like usual.  I turned on his mobile above his head and as soon as he saw the animals moving he intentionally smiled.  Then he did it again!!  Obviously I don’t have pictures yet, but he is going to Aggieland this weekend for the first time.  I’m sure he will be all smiles while we are there 😉

Zoo Trip

Holy week was a great week for the Baldwin family.  Not only is it Holy Week and my favorite week of the year, but since we had bible study Tuesday, and then church Thursday, Friday and Sunday we spent lots of time with all of our friends.  It almost felt like FIESTA week in high school.  Everyday is another “play date” with your friends (only now that includes kids too!!)  Tuesday we had a traditional Messianic Seder meal at the Knights house.  Thursday after church we went to Ryan’s for game night.  Then Friday morning it was the zoo!!!

Reed and I went to the Zoo on Good Friday with all the girls and his future friends.  The San Antonio Zoo is a great attraction to take kids to because parking is free, close and always has open spots.  Plus, the season pass is only $50 for a family.  So, we went to the zoo with some friends and bought our season pass.

What started out as a trip with 3 mommies and 3 kids turned into an awesome group of 6 mommies, 7 kids, 5 strollers (and 2 kids in utero!)  Anyone who knows me knows I’m a morning person so I was pushing for a 9am start to the trip and I’m so grateful everyone else agreed.  At the beginning of the morning the kids were free to run around and play with each other with all the mommies watching all the kids.  By the time we left at noon it was getting too crowded for comfort.  The zoo was getting packed and there were a bunch of older kids pushing and running.  After 3 hours of seeing all the animals and playing with their friends the kids were ready to ride the train and then go home for a nap.

Reed slept through the entire trip and never even opened his eyes until I took him out of his stroller for the group picture.  We are hoping to go again soon with Randy.  Hopefully we can get Reed to sit in the Baby Bjorn (haven’t been successful at that one yet, he just screams) and then he might actually see some of the zoo!!!

Thanks to all the ladies (Missie, Danielle, Megan, Leslie, and Lisa) for the great play day at the zoo!!!  We can’t wait to do it again soon.

First night in the crib

Reed is 5 weeks old today…and he slept in his crib for the first time last night!!  He has been sleeping in his pack ‘n play in the living room for the past 4 weeks, but we had to move the pack ‘n play Monday so the delivery guys could get the new stove in place.  He slept in our room (still in the pack ‘n play) Monday night and we realized its time for him to move to the crib.  Luckily our house is small, so it isn’t much farther to walk to his nursery.

After bible study last night we put him down in his nursery and he did great!!  There is no doubt the pack ‘n play can’t be very comfortable.  I think knowing the crib would be more comfortable for him was a good incentive for us to make the move.  Let’s hope he keeps loving his room!!

I really love this life

I officially love being at home with Reed.  It took me a few weeks, but we have gotten into a good little routine, and now I don’t know what I will do when its time to go back to work in a few short weeks.  My friend Brittney is also a new mom and she said it perfectly…being a stay at home mom just allows you to have a slower paced life.  You still stay busy and have lots to do, but you get to do it on your time.  No alarm clocks ringing at 5am, no traffic to fight, and the best parts are running errands in the middle of the day and walking outside anytime you want.  These are all little luxuries, but they add up to a great life.  Last night Randy walked in the back door after his grueling 5 minute walk of a commute and said, “I really love this life.”  I have to agree dear!!  I get to spend all day playing with Reed and being a relaxed version of myself.  Randy walks in the door to a happy baby, a clean house, and dinner.  If only we could find a way to double Randy’s salary or one of us fall into a bunch of money so I didn’t have to go back!!

I still have 7 weeks at home and we are planning to enjoy every minute!!  Maybe one day I will find a part-time position where I can have the best of both worlds!!

Newborn No More

It’s official.  My sweet little baby is not a newborn anymore.  I don’t know how this happened, but sometime around Thursday or Friday of last week I looked at him and he looked different.  His face has already fattened up and he is much sturdier than before.  He doesn’t sleep all day and is quite alert for most of the day.  His eating habits are obviously well established and we don’t have any problems with nursing.  Reed has discovered his tongue and loves to play with it in his mouth.  He also has new noises and his cry is getting louder (oh joy).

I really can’t believe I have been off of work for 4 weeks and that we have had him for 4 weeks.  Time is definitely flying.  It feels like a lifetime ago that we were in the hospital.

Happy 4 week birthday little Reed!!

2 Week Checkup

Monday March 23rd we went to see Dr. Purnell for Reed’s 2 week checkup.  He weighed a solid 9 pounds 3 ounces!!  That is 1 pound more than his birth weight and in the 75th percentile.  He was 22 inches long which is the 50th percentile.  Overall Dr. Purnell was very pleased with his growth and told Reed to keep eating as well as he has been.

Lunchtime Fun

We are blessed because Randy’s office shares our back fence.  He literally walks through our backyard everyday to get to work (and his office is closer to the house than our mailbox!)  Consequently, we get to spend lunch together everyday.  It helps break up the day for me and its great for Randy to get to spend an hour with Reed in the middle of every weekday.

Life Update

As I’m sure everyone can understand…life has been busy, crazy and wonderful the last 2 weeks.  Reed is 2 weeks old today and I can finally understand why all new moms talk about how time flies once baby makes his appearance.  I can not believe he has been here two whole weeks, and even more amazing is that he wasn’t due until this past Sunday, March 15th.  These past two weeks would have been SO much slower if he wasn’t here!!

We have had many funny things happen, taken hundreds of pictures, and a few firsts that should be shared.

The first bath was a comedy of errors.  The nurses in the hospital are amazing.  Every night they would take Reed from me and give him a bath.  When he came back to me he smelled lovely and was in a wonderfully sweet mood.  The same did not happen when we gave him his first bath at home.  We took him into our bathroom because it has the most counter space.  I laid him on his back on top of his towel to start sponge bathing him.  Of course, as soon as Randy took off his diaper he peed all over me and his towel.  So towel 1 was toast.  The bath commenced and he screamed.  Randy grabbed the clean and unhappy baby in a new baby towel to take him to the changing table in our room for a new diaper.  About 3 steps from the bathroom Reed pooped all over Randy and the new towel.  All we could do was look at each other and laugh.  The most unfortunate part is that we didn’t get pictures of any of it.  It took both of us just to keep him safe, so we didn’t have any extra hands to snap pictures.

The next big first was our first trip to the pediatrician.  We have chosen to see the same doctor I went to as a child.  Not only do I love Dr. Purnell, but my mom worked in the office for many years when I was very young so she came with us to the first appointment.  It was like old home week for her.  She was chatting with all her nursing friends and it was great to see Dr. Purnell again.  Thankfully Reed did great and at 6 days old he was one ounce shy of his birth weight.  One other great thing about mom being with us is that she took pictures.  (As usual, Randy will have to post those later)

Thankfully, Reed is generally a happy baby.  We certainly have our tough nights and our good nights, but for the most part he is happy.  Most importantly, we love him to pieces.  His natural expression looks like a grumpy old man and it cracks me up all the time.  I hope the grumpiness fades in time, but for now it is hilarious.

True Knot Baby

I will admit that I didn’t know the impact or the possible outcome of a “true knot baby”.  Randy posted a link to our birth story on Facebook and one of his friends is a labor and delivery nurse.  After reading about the knot in Reed’s umbilical cord here was her comment: “Thank goodness for the c/s. I always tell the parents of True Knot babies that they are little miracles. That is how babies die in delivery and in-utero. Thank the LORD!!! He is so cute. Congrats.”

Obviously I wasn’t completely informed of what could have happened (which I am thankful for).  Is it wrong that this makes me think he is a very special boy and wonder what he will offer this world??  All I know for sure is that I love him more than I could have ever imagined.  I literally spend hours each day just holding him and looking at him.

Welcome Reed Matthew Baldwin

I went to the doctor for my 38 week appointment on Tuesday March 3 at 3pm.  The nurse took all of my measurements and vitals.  The doctor came in shortly after and took my blood pressure manually.  He immediately was concerned.  My blood pressure had elevated from a normal reading 7 days prior to 144 over 104.  Very scary levels.  He immediately checked fetal heartbeat and checked the swelling in my feet.  As I have mentioned to all of you my feet were unnaturally large.  Not just pregnant large, but scary big.  The doctor ‘checked me’ and said I was only dilated to 1 & 1/2 and effaced to about 50%.  He looked me in the face and said, “Ok, I’m on call tonight so why don’t you go next door (St. Luke’s Hospital is connected to his office) and let’s do this tonight.”  He left the room, I got dressed and went into the hall.  By this time I’m shaking because I’m excited but also scared.  (Randy wasn’t with me because he had a meeting).  I grabbed the doctor again and asked him exactly what he meant by his previous statement.  He clarified and said he had already sent orders to the hospital (in the 5 minutes it took me to get out of exam room) and that I needed to go straight there and they would run some tests, but that he expected to deliver the baby that night.

Needless to say I texted Randy and said to call me immediately, I didn’t care what was happening in his meeting.  He called and I told him we were having the baby tonight.  Both of us were pretty speechless.  Like all of my accountant friends I am a huge planner and like to be prepared.  Unfortunately, I was not.  I didn’t have a hospital bag or anything except my purse.  Randy is wonderful and was the calm voice of reason.  He said he was shutting down his computer as we spoke and for me to head to the hospital and think about any last minute things I wanted him to grab at the house.

I went over to Labor & Delivery.  I walked in the door and they said “Are you Julie Baldwin?”  Apparently the doctor had told them to drop all other patients and tend to me the moment I walked in.  I was immediately taken to a room, hooked up to a fetal heart monitor and an IV and had lots of bloodwork drawn.  Finally I was able to talk to Randy and he was on his way to meet me.

At this point I did not want to call anyone to tell them the news because there was still a chance my labs would come back normal and they would send me home, but put me on bed rest.  The labs came back totally normal with no red flags.  I was sad and relieved at the same time.  As all of you know I really wanted to have the baby, but my doctor was telling me he wanted to do a c-section because he was afraid the baby was too big.  I have been pretty laid back about my pregnancy and about delivery.  I didn’t have a birth plan or any special instructions to be followed during delivery…except that I didn’t want a c-section.  Needless to say I was very disappointed.

The doctor ordered a sonogram to determine an estimate of the baby’s size.  Again, based on that result would determine what we did next, so I still couldn’t share the news with anyone.  The sonogram showed that he was wedged into my pelvis and the tech estimated that he weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces.  The doctor came back in and told me he wanted to perform a c-section immediately.  I voiced my concern and told him I would like to try to a natural birth if at all possible.  He agreed that I could try, but he needed to break my water and put me on pitocin.  He also told me that if I didn’t progress we would need to do a c-section.  I of course agreed that whatever was best for the baby was my first concern and all other requests were secondary.

At 7:30pm he broke my water and at 8pm the pitocin drip started.  I was at a 3.  I wanted to wait as long as possible before I took any drugs for the simple fact that medicine can slow down the dilation process.  Contractions started almost immediately and I was not a very happy person.  Oh yeah, at this point we finally alerted our families, and our bibles study group who was meeting at that time.  I told Randy he was the Director of Outside Communications from then on and I put my phone away.

At 10:30 I asked for the IV drugs.  Of all the things I did this is the one I wish I would have skipped.  All the drugs did was make me very groggy.  I was almost totally out of it, but would wake up for each contraction.  What a waste.  At 12:30am the doctor came back and checked me.  I was still at a 3.

At 1am I finally asked for the epidural.  The anesthesiologist was wonderful and very prompt.  By 1:30 I couldn’t feel my legs or the contractions.  It also gave me a chance to sleep.  Sadly, Randy didn’t get the same.  His bed was very uncomfortable and he didn’t get any sleep.  As a side note, I had no idea Randy had been updating Facebook this whole time.  I’m so thankful he did that because it helped him to fulfill his duty and still tend to me with every contraction.

At 3:45am the doctor woke me up, checked me and I was still at a 3.  Obviously I wasn’t going to progress and a c-section was ordered.  I didn’t argue in the least.  Clearly this is how God and Reed wanted this to happen.  Little did I know what a blessing that would be…

Randy called my mom and his mom.  They wheeled me into surgery and Randy got into his “rabbit suit”.  I won’t bore you with any surgery details except the most important one.  Once they cut me open and were ready to pull Reed out the entire staff below the curtain started talking about how “unusual” it was.  Randy stood up to take pictures (the wonderful staff allowed us to take pictures even though that is strictly forbidden).  Reed’s cord was tied into a tight overhand knot!!  They quickly pulled him out and got him cleaned up and in Randy’s arms.  During the whole surgery I could hardly keep my eyes open because of the drugs, but it was perfect.  Reed was perfect and a healthy 8 pounds 3 ounces (good sonogram tech, right?!) and 19.5 inches long at 4:31am.

We went back into my labor and delivery room and both our parents and both my sisters were there with tears in their eyes to greet us.

The next day we asked the doctor what the potential implications of the knot in the cord were.  He said that usually the child dies.  I almost broke down in tears.  If I had gotten my way and he had been born naturally he would have very likely died in childbirth.  I can not thank Dr. Gonima enough for making the decision he made to go ahead and perform a c-section.  It wasn’t what was in my plan, but it was definitely in God’s plan.

I love this little guy so much that I truly can’t describe it.  I hope you enjoy the pictures below!!
