Picking Grandparent names was so much harder than we realized. All four of our parents wanted to make sure they had special names that fit them. None of them were satisfied with Nanna or Gramma. So, after much ado…here are the grandparent names:
Julie’s Mom – Ya-Ya
Julie’s Dad – Duke
Randy’s Mom – Granny B
Randy’s Dad – Papa B
Aww! I love Ya-Ya! Too cute…maybe that’s what I’ll be when I grow up. My mom was quite obsessed with what she’d be for a while- it was very important to her.
What’s even more fun is when the kid starts trying to say the names you’ve so carefully chosen and winds up with something way more precious. My mother wanted to be Gramma and my nephew could only manage Amah. She loves being “Amah”. My grandparents were supposed to be Grandmama and Granddaddy but wound up being Memama and Dedaddy. Way more fun! The first grandbaby has all the fun getting to name the grands. After that, us younger kids just have to follow suit.
That’s cute! Is Julie’s mom a member of the “Ya Ya Sisterhood”? 🙂 My sister’s grandkids have different names for each of their grandparents, too. When they were here visiting, I asked the 6 year old about “Grandma,” referring to my sister and he gave me an odd look. His mom explained that “Grandma” is her mom, Nanama is my sister’s name. Or was it Meemaw? One of her grandkids calls her Nanamaw and the other calls her Meemaw. The 6 year old didn’t seem to have a problem with his cousin calling her by a different name than he does. (Mine were all Gramma a Grampa.)
