7 Things You Never Knew About Me

Summer tagged me too…

1. I hate all condiments.  At first I thought it was vinegar that I hated (which would explain why I love cucumbers, hate pickles; love tomato sauce, hate ketchup).  Now I think it is also a texture thing.  I can’t imagine eating a blob of mustard, mayonnaise, cream cheese, sour cream…yuck!  Sadly, this food aversion means I (like Sarah) won’t eat chicken salad and lots of creamy dips.  Just grosses me out.

2. All my life I have been a bad girlfriend to other women.  I tend to get along with men better than women and I thought that was just how my friendships would be the rest of my life.  Only in the last few years have a really learned the value of solid girlfriends.  Now I wish I hadn’t lost so much time and so many friends over the years.  Girlfriends are the best!!!

3. I am strangely happy at my job.  I have lots of friends at work and enjoy what I’m doing.  That has never happened to me before and it makes the decisions of what to do once baby comes very challenging.  After searching for 5 years, can I really give up the most enjoyable job I’ve had?  Not a question I’m ready to tackle just yet.

4. I’m also weird about Christmas morning.  I don’t like to go anywhere on Christmas day.  My entire life I have politely agreed to attend family Christmas gatherings on the day because I had to.  All the while I vowed that when I had children I wouldn’t force the same thing on them.  (To clarify, it isn’t that I don’t want to see family and celebrate Christmas, quite the opposite.  I just want to do the family gatherings on a different day.  Christmas should be about staying home and enjoying each other without having to get dressed if you don’t want to.)  My aunt has said that when her kids were little she told family that they were welcome at her house, but they weren’t leaving their house.  Seems like a great idea to me.

5. I love to entertain.  not sure where this comes from, maybe its because my mom didn’t like to do it that I have developed an affinity for it.  This is how I show people love.  I’m not so good with the physical showcases of love, but I will surely cook for you if I love you!

6. After spending the weekend with my grandmother (she stayed at our house) I started to understand some of my weird traits…because I’m just like her!!  She asks tons of questions (like my 800 questions a day quota), she needs to know what’s going on and what the plans are (this is totally opposite of both my parents!!) and she gets very frustrated when people don’t do what they commit to do.  I possess all of these seemingly inane traits which wouldn’t be too strange except that no one in my family has these traits.  It was wonderful to finally figure out why I’m so particular and why I’m so bossy.  It comes straight from Gramma K!!!

7. I’m beginning to get nervous about having a boy.  The more time I spend with little boys the more I realize I truly know nothing about raising them.  I’m such a planner that I know I will find a way to prepare myself (or at least prepare myself that I can’t prepare for this kind of miracle), and I know that we will be fine.  But I’m more nervous than I thought I would be.  Should be quite an adventure!!

Baby update

In the spirit of keeping this blog a reference for baby Baldwin, I figured I would write about some of the things going on with me.

First of all is food.  Clearly this child is Randy’s because all he wants me to eat is healthy food.  (We will see how that progresses as we get further into the holidays…)  For the past several months my favorite things to eat are honeycrisp apples, celery and peanut butter, and cereal.  I think I could probably live on that diet for the next 4 months if it was healthy enough.

Baby is moving around a lot these days.  I used to only feel him if I paid attention and even then it was very limited.  Starting a few days ago I feel him all the time.  Sometimes I think he is never going to stop moving.  An added benefit to this increased movement is that Randy finally felt him move for the first time this weekend.

We had another doctor’s appointment on Friday and everything still looks good.  My blood pressure is fairly low as usual, weight gain is still minimal and when the doctor went to listen to baby’s heartbeat it was very distinct, loud and strong.  No compliants from doctor, baby or mom.  Let’s hope all the appointments go this well!!  Next appointment is in mid December when I get to do the lovely Glucose test.

Alaska

Last week I was in Alaska for work.  Thankfully it was my last work trip before baby comes.  I truly love Alaska and would recommend that everyone go there at least once in their life.  I have been lucky enough to go 4 times in the last 2 years.  All that being said…this trip is the latest in the year I have ever been.  It was cold, and dark.  The sun came up around 9:45am and then set at 6:30pm.  Each day we lost approximately 6 minutes of daylight.  The temperature fluctuated from a balmy 28 to a frigid 3!!  For me, the cold wasn’t the bad part….it was the darkness.

The flight itself was very long.  I had to stop in Houston, Seattle, Anchorage and finally Kenai.  Monday morning I spent over 15 hours in airports and on planes.  Then I repeated the same flight pattern Thursday night/Friday morning.  When I left Kenai on Thursday afternoon it was 18 degrees, when I landed in San Antonio on Friday it was almost 80 degrees.  All the climate change and the excessive number of altitude changes have caused me to get a double ear infection.  However, if an ear infection is the worst that happens to me while I’m pregnant I won’t complain.

I’m 21 weeks now and still don’t have much of a belly to show off, but I promise to take a picture tonight and post it in the morning.

He’s Alive

Friday was easily the best day of pregnancy so far.  Not only did we find out that baby Baldwin is a boy, but I when I was laying down to go to sleep Friday night I felt him move for the first time!!!

We were in College Station for the Aggie game and Randy was at midnight yell with his sisters.  Mom, Dad and I stayed back because we had to get up super early to hit HEB around 7am.  We were all starting to fall asleep and I felt this bubble in the left side of my stomach.  I yelled to my parents that I just felt him move for the first time.  I was sad Randy wasn’t there, but he wouldn’t have been able to feel it anyway.

Now that I know what it feels like I feel him moving all the time.  It is so sweet (at least it is now before he is kicking me in the ribs in the middle of the night).  It makes me feel so connected to him.  The best part about all of this movement is that I don’t think I will forget I’m pregnant anymore!!!

it’s a boy!!

Julie and I have had this day on our calendar for 2 months — Friday, October 17th — the doctor’s appointment to determine the sex of the baby.

If you asked us each what we thought we were having or what we wanted to have up until Friday, you would have had an uncertain and very reserved answer. Julie “felt” like it was a girl long ago — many superstitions and some facts gave some grounds to back it up, but nothing was for certain. (She had only known girls growing up with 3 sisters and no brothers, so I attribute some of her feeling to that.)

I, on the other hand, was very torn. I knew what I WANTED. However, I reserved my desires in the event that the nurse told us that we were in fact having the OPPOSITE of my preference. My real desire was to have an impartial yet excited reaction when we found out, so I told everyone that I would be happy either way. It’s in God’s hands and we truly have no control over the situation.

However, God does know each of our hearts — whether we vocalize it or not.

When the sonogram, showed “two legs and something in between”, Julie and I almost cried right there in front of the nurse. It was amazing. She and I had been holding back what our true preference was so that we wouldn’t be disappointed. Now that we knew, it was a huge weight off our shoulders and we could get back to being excited about the pregnancy. In the blink of an eye, our future as parents had a much more defined path and it is the path we each hoped to be on.

I am more excited now that I ever imagined I could be. I’m anxious to meet my own son!

ps — The only question left: Does he throw with his right or left?

Pregnancy Update

I have been horribly slow posting updates about me and baby and how things are going.  I promise to try to do better, but be forewarned that this post is long.  Right now I’m at 16 weeks.  I was very lucky through the first trimester and didn’t have any morning sickness.  That good feeling has continued into the second trimester and so far everything is going so well that most of the time I forget I’m even pregnant.  (I’m hoping that will change soon!!)  Physical changes are definitely starting to happen, but I’m not showing just yet.

During the last 2 doctor’s appointments I got to hear the heartbeat, so we know everything is still going well.  The most exciting news is that on October 17th we have scheduled another ultrasound and get to find out the sex of the baby!!  I promise to let everyone know as soon as possible once we find out.

A few days after I got home from Salt Lake City I shared the news with my office.  I couldn’t wait any longer because I’m currently scheduled to go to Long Beach, San Francisco, Mandan, ND and Kenai, AK in the first 4 months of 2009.  Obviously that is not possible.  It felt like the right thing to do even though I probably could have waited another few weeks.  Needless to say I will be leading those audits from San Antonio,

As I mentioned before, I thought Salt Lake City would be my last work trip before baby comes.  That didn’t quite work out for me.  I’ll give you a short explanation of what happened…

I have unofficially become the Maintenance Turnaround and Capital Projects senior.  I love going to the refineries and enjoy operational audits much more than SOX or financial audits.  I also tend to get along with the refinery guys very well so it is a perfect fit.  The 4 trips I mentioned I was scheduled to take in 2009 are all for maintenance turnarounds.  One planning step performed by each turnaround team is a Peer Review.  The Peer Review takes place 6 months prior to the turnaround.  Engineers from each refinery attend the review, walk the units, and go through the plan in place and offer recommendations on how to improve the plan and shorten the length of time the plant is shut down.  As the turnaround senior I also attend these Peer Reviews.  Today I’m in the thriving metropolis of Bismarck, North Dakota and the last week of October I will be in Kenai, Alaska.  After these two trips I should be grounded until our vacation to Mexico in early December!!

One thing that’s fun about my travel is that so far baby has been to the lake, the mountains, the beach and while in Alaska, baby will also be in snow.  Lucky kid!!

So there you have it…long winded update!!

Roscoe

Baby Baldwin has already been given a multitude of nicknames.  Much to my mom’s dismay, the one that pops out of my mouth the most is Roscoe.  I did not come up with it…I promise.  In Randy’s family the first born male in the family is supposed to have the initials RMB.  As such, we have been trying to come up with good “R” and “M” boy names.  While in Salt Lake City for work (it was supposed to be my last work trip, but I will go into that in another post), I was having dinner with two of my favorite co-workers.  We were discussing names and Todd decided we should go with Roscoe.  Since we work together, and he is stuck working with me on most of my jobs, I see him more than most people.  He asks how Roscoe is doing quite often, so it stuck.

Mom is not happy about the nickname and thinks Kip is much better, but it will only be baby’s name for a few more weeks.  We will be finding out the sex of Baby Baldwin in just a few short weeks.  Then we can get serious about names…

making room

Living in a 3-2 house has afforded us the space to have a spacious office AND an extra bedroom for guests. That extra bedroom has come in handy several times in the 2+ years we’ve been in the house. The list of distinguished guests includes: Amber, Lindy, Simon, Grandma Killam and even a group of traveling christian skaters (they came to give their testimony and demonstration to kick-off “Skate Church”, a new outreach ministry at our church). Before the end of the year we are likely to host another friend that will be in-between appartments for a few weeks, and then Grandma Killam again. As you can see, our extra bedroom has been utilized and we’ve enjoyed the ability to offer it to those who have needed a place to stay.

All that is about to change.

To say that Julie has been excited about transforming our extra bedroom into the new baby room would be an understatement. She sees visions of safari animals and baby cribs and rocking chairs dancing around in her head. No offense to Simon, but she was so anxious for him to move out so she could begin her nesting and transform this rather drab-colored room into a “Baby Safari”.

The closet in this extra bedroom has been the resting ground for crafts, holiday decorations, extra hanging garments and unused wedding gifts. The first steps toward transformation is to clean out (and relocate) a lot of the “stuff” in that closet. The usual three piles of cleaning apply: Trash, Save, Give Away. It’s always good to do…. but it’s just freakin’ tedious!!

We’ll keep the extra bed in that room until it is time to trade out the bed for the crib, but a word of caution to our house guests until then: you may have flashbacks of daycare during the night.

the cat's out of the bag

We’ve had to put our baby blog on the back burner for the last two weeks, but not much has happened on that front either. I was in Costa Rica for a week, and then Julie left for Anacortes, WA about 12 hours after I returned.

While Julie was in Washington, she stayed the weekend with her Aunt Candy and Uncle Ed. We rarely see them and it was the perfect time for Julie to tell them in person… Candy was ecstatic and immediately took Julie shopping for maternity clothes. Back in Texas, Julie’s Uncle Tim and Aunt Jenny were in San Antonio and we were all over at the Reasonovers’ for dinner and a trip to the neighborhood pool. This was Julie’s family, but I stepped-in to break the news during another rare face-to-face meeting. Julie Anne, a cousin, immediately jumped to give me a hug and went to her phone… I told her “Your mom (Candy) already knows!” She responded with disgust, “How dare she not tell me!!??”. There’s a reason we chose this order…

Once Julie returned from her business in Washington, we were finally set to start spreading the word. The events for the weekend gave us some prime opportunities to talk to people one-on-one in person and share the reaction.

First up was the baby shower for Sarah Pike that Julie and her mother and sisters were invited to. Sarah and her husband, Jim, are college friends of Julie’s and are due in October. We have had an ongoing couple relationship with them as we have each been married and made the time to hang out a the river at least once a year. Julie was afraid of stealing Sarah’s thunder so she told her the news in private, but it was Sarah that asked Julie if she could tell everyone. The shower attendees congratulated Julie, and Sarah graciously shared the spotlight.

That evening, we attended a wedding for a couple from the church that Julie met on her trip to Rwanda last year. Several of our closest friends from church were there and it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. The best reaction of the night goes to Perry — he gave us both a hug and then looked me in the eyes and said, “Now you’ve proven your manhood, good job!”

At church the next morning, we went to our usual 9:30am service. I was most excited to see my cousin Patty and her husband, Jeff. We’ve been sitting with them pretty regularly at church lately and their daughter Katharine is always excited to sit with Julie and I. At the end of the service, we told Patty and Jeff and several other friends. Hope, one friend from bible study, broke down and cried when she gave Julie a very emotional and sincere hug. She and all of our bible study have been praying for us for quite some time. We stuck around for the beginning of the later service to catch those friends that we had not seen earlier. When we got home we realized how many of those key people we saw in such a short amount of time!!

We likely have a couple more phone calls to make, but at this point we are certain that the word is going to spread faster than we can control… it’s like herding cats. We want to thank all you for your prayers, your concern and your love. Julie tells me that she has never felt more special or loved than she has in the last few days that we have been sharing our news.

the grandparents

Julie and I are fortunate enough to have all four grandmothers still alive and kickin’. It never fails that when we take the time to see them, they always tell us goodbye and say, “you should come see us more often.” What grandkid has ever heard that before and NOT been overcome with guilt? When we think to explain our busy lives we try to find reasons within the society that our generation has created, but then even that answer doesn’t even sound good in our head. Grandparents have that special place in our hearts that we respect and love in a completely different way than any other relative, and we all do our best make time for them in our lives.

For each of our grandmothers, we set aside the time to talk-to or visit with them to share the news. Julie called Grandma Killam in Temple. We stopped by Granny Reasonover’s house during the 12 hours that Julie and I were together in town after my Costa Rica trip and before her Washington trip. We visited with my dad’s mom and stepdad, Mama B and Papa Roy after church on Sunday. I talked to Grandma Pribyl on the phone while she was in Houston celebrating Uncle Joe’s birthday with most of my mom’s siblings.

Each event was special to us. However, what we’ve realized is that we certainly played it up more in our heads than what actually happened. We realized that our grandparents have done this before… this isn’t news of their first child, or grandchild, and in most cases even first great-grandchild. Our grandmothers are seasoned veterans and the news of new life… just isn’t new!!

Now, I’m not saying they weren’t happy for us. Each of them had responses of joy and congratulations, but it’s like they either already KNEW it, or it was just another verse to a song they’ve heard before. I guess you could compare it to the economic law of Diminishing Returns.
