Best Baby EVER!!!

Our weekend trip to Dallas turned into the weekend from hell.  Mishaps alone are not a big deal, but add 100+ degree weather and you have a recipie for disaster!!!

Most of you who know my family and me know that they make fun of my 2 degree thermostat.  My mom (lovingly, I think) jokes that I have a 2 degree thermostat.  I’m either burning up or freezing cold.  There is no in between and since I live in South Texas, I’m usually burning up.  I know, what a brat.  I tell you this because I want you to keep in mind that everything I’m about to explain happened on the hottest weekend of the year in 100-105 degree weather.

We left San Antonio at 10am Friday morning headed for a relaxing weekend in Dallas where Randy would get to play volleyball and I would get to spend lots of time with all of my friends in Dallas who I don’t get to see very often.  When we were in San Marcos the air conditioner in Randy’s car decided to stop working.  We had to turn around and change cars.  (Don’t forget that we had to drive 45 minutes home with no a/c.)  Not only was it scorching hot in the car, but the thermostat kept beeping the entire time.  Randy and I didn’t speak.  The whole way home I kept praying that Reed was ok and that he would stay asleep.  I don’t think I could have dealt with a screaming baby on top of the heat and stress.  He proved he IS the best baby in the world because he slept the whole way home.

We got home and moved all our stuff to my car.  At noon we were headed out for the second time.  The rest of the trip was long and 35 was full of traffic, but it was uneventful.  We even got to Dallas in time to have dinner with the Browns and the Keiths, which was the whole reason Reed and I came on the trip.  Unfortunately we had to cut our time short because we hadn’t checked into the hotel yet and didn’t know what we were going to find.  Thank the Lord we left when we did.

We got to our hotel (which I foolishly picked out online and prepaid for).  It was next door to a strip club.  I could probably stop talking right there and you would get the picture.  I won’t go into details because this post is going to be long enough, but I have never felt more dirty and unsafe in my life.  We walked up to the room took one look and walked back out to our car, drove off and never looked back.  At this point it is 10:30 and we have had a terribly exhausting day, we are still hot and smelly and we have no idea where we are going to sleep.  I drove to Grand Prairie and luckily we found a hotel.  We finally got into bed at midnight.

The next day was Randy’s tournament.  We prepared for the heat, but there really is no way to prepare for it.  As we leave the hotel we notice that I-20 West is completely shut down.  Luckily we didn’t have to get on it, but there was an accident and it had been shut down since 5am.

The tournament was good.  Randy’s team was having a good time and surviving the heat.  Reed slept most of the morning and I was sweaty, but ok.  At 1pm I decide I need to get Reed (and me) out of the heat so we head back to the hotel.  Randy had a 2 hour break so we were going to cool down and then come back for his last match.  I completely forgot about I-20.  I got on the highway before I could see that the traffic was still stopped.  It took me an hour to go one exit.  I was in tears because I was so sweaty and hot and truly didn’t know how long I would be stuck.  Plus, my a/c was working but there is only so much it can do in stopped traffic.  Once again, Reed is a life saver.  He slept the whole time.  I think I might have had a nervous breakdown if he had been screaming in the back seat because I already felt like a terrible mom for keeping him in the heat as long as I did.  Needless to say we did not watch Randy’s last match.

The rest of the weekend was fine.  We had dinner with Amanda and John Saturday night and Sunday the boys played again.  They finished playing in time for us to take showers in the hotel before we hit the road again.  The drive home was SO much better than the drive up there.  Totally uneventful.

The reason for the title of my post is that all weekend I kept saying how greatful I am that Reed is such a good sleeper and is so laid back.  I wonder where he gets it from, because it obviously isn’t from me!!!!

Grandparent Names

Picking Grandparent names was so much harder than we realized.  All four of our parents wanted to make sure they had special names that fit them.  None of them were satisfied with Nanna or Gramma.  So, after much ado…here are the grandparent names:

Julie’s Mom – Ya-Ya

Julie’s Dad – Duke

Randy’s Mom – Granny B

Randy’s Dad – Papa B

The Amazing Bumbo

So, we got to the point where we realized that if we were going to be productive around the house (ie: chores and such), we were going to HAVE to put The Kid down somewhere. “Somewhere” could only be a few places:

– Crib
– Swing
– Nuzzled in the corner of the couch
– Activity mat

With any of these above, you had a ticking time bomb from the time you set him down to the time he would get fussy, or just want attention. We also had a hunch that he just got tired of being on his back all day, or sitting reclined in his carrier or swing. When we sat him on our lap, he was developing great head/neck control and was very attentive to everything around him.

img_4058Enter, the Bumbo. This incredible invention provides great support in all directions for babies that can’t quite sit on their own. The only requirement is head/neck control. So… we swung by Target last Saturday and picked one up. We honestly thought that Reed had to still be a bit older to use one, but our friends confirmed that as long as he had the head control, he would be safe and comfortable.

It worked!! Reed fit comfortably in the seat and had great control of his head. It was truly a moment of epiphany for Julie and I, as we realized how easily we could set him ANYWHERE we were and give him something to chew or play with to be occupied. He does lean forward a bit when at rest, but can easily pick his head up to look around. Overall, I think it is a feeling of independence for all THREE of us.

3 month update

img_3516We’ve got lots to tell you about Reed, so in no particular order we are going to brain dump on you what we have experienced in the last month. We are likely going to update this list in the days to come as we remember stuff, so check back later as well.

 – He smiles consistently – when he wakes up, when he gets excited, and after a diaper change
– Reed is still in his “Daddy phase”.  Anytime he sees Randy after a long absence he immediately smiles and talks to him.  He loves to just stare at Randy too.
– Stares at lights and fans
– Sleeps 8-10 hours a night since 8 weeks
– He’s interested in toys now – will hold them and pull them to his mouth, but will not re-grasp them if they fall to the side
– loves his activity mat (thanks, Greg!)
– talks to himself when he wakes up in the morning – we woke up to squeals and giggles in the baby monitor one morning, the best sound ever!
– falls asleep like his mom – asleep as soon as his head hits the bed and usually doesn’t even want a pacifier
– still majority breast fed, zero to one formula bottle a day
– pulls his feet up to his chest, but no interest in turning over yet
– wearing 3-6mo clothes at 9 weeks
– loves his swing – either sleeping or content and awake (praise the Lord for this wonderful gift from Cindi)
– He loves being outside – if he gets fussy we put him in the stroller and head for a walk.  Just walking outside calms him
– He has two tooth buds that we noticed at 11 weeks but he’s been chewing on his fists since 9 weeks
– He has discovered the television and goes into a trance when it catches his eye (which we try to keep to an absolute minimum)
– Sits on daddy’s lap comfortably – will sit for extended periods of time awake or even fall asleep
– Squeals with delight when he gets excited – makes all kinds of noises now, but none compare to a squeal of happiness

And here is a collection of pictures from the last month as well.

2 Month Update

We have been a little slow in posting updates.  I will try to get back into the blogging groove.

Reed’s 2 month appointment with Dr. Purnell went well, except the shots of course. He had to get 5 shots in his fat little thighs.  I was strong while the nurse was in the room and didn’t cry, but as soon as she walked out and I could start dressing him I had big huge tears falling down my face.  I wasn’t expecting that reaction and was rather surprised at myself.  Reed fell asleep almost immediately which made the drive home better than expected.  When he woke up around lunchtime he screamed so much and was in such pain that I cried again.  Once we got some Tylenol in him he was ok and rested well the rest of the day.  Shots are not fun and I can understand why my mom said the number one reason she would not go back to work in Dr. Purnell’s office after she retires from the school district in 2 years is because she hated giving the shots.  Not fun at all.

Stats: Weight – 12 pounds 8 ounces, 75th percentile,  Height – 23 1/2 inches, about 55th percentile.

Reed is in a daddy phase right now.  The moment he sees or hears Randy his eyes light up and his whole face smiles.  Sometimes he even squeals with delight.  He might love his daddy, but he definitely is on my schedule (which is wonderful).  His best time of the day is first thing in the morning.  I love going to get him out of his crib and bringing him into our bed to wake Randy up (yes, Randy sleeps very late!!) He is always so happy and ready to wake up.  The best news is that he has been consistently sleeping from about 10pm to 5am.  This has been happening on a regular basis for the past 2 weeks or so.  I can only pray this will last once I start back at work.

Smiles

Reed has been flashing smiles for a while…but I didn’t count it until I thought he was intentionally smiling.  Today was the day.  I put him in his crib this morning for his nap and when he woke up he was happy and kicking his legs like usual.  I turned on his mobile above his head and as soon as he saw the animals moving he intentionally smiled.  Then he did it again!!  Obviously I don’t have pictures yet, but he is going to Aggieland this weekend for the first time.  I’m sure he will be all smiles while we are there 😉

And now a word from your father

Julie has been amazingly persistent with her updates to this blog, so much so that if she leaves me with anything to post about, it is the scraps leftover that she tossed aside. I’m proud of her. After all, she spends the most time with Reed at this time in his life and should rightfully have the most to say.

My other excuse is that our house has been in a constant state of change since we got home from the hospital with our little bundle of joy, but more so recently when almost EVERY appliance we have seemed to conspire against us at the same time! First, the (electric) stove started losing burners. Then the water heater started leaking. The microwave took up smoking. And the dishwasher spray arm spun off and melted. We chipped away at each of these over the span of a month, all the while Julie stayed at home with a kitchen in complete disarray. After all is said and done, we are now sporting a new (gas) stove, microwave/vent-hood, water heater and fixed dishwasher. Thank goodness for savings because it got a workout!

I digress… that was long winded to simply tell you what I’ve been doing these days when I am not hanging out with my son and taking our usual walks in the neighborhood.

Reed is 6 weeks old now. Somewhere right after 4 weeks, the little guy beefed up and changed from newborn to baby, almost overnight. All of the sudden he was more sturdy and durable to hold and had gained a few fat rolls. He can hold his head steady, but any lean to one side or another and he is a regular bobble head.

Opening Day

I love baseball. I love the game as much as I love the culture that surrounds the game. I love the simplicity of grabbing a glove and a ball to play catch. It is one of my fondest memories growing up in a yard big enough that my dad would catch for me pitching, or throw me some fielding practice. I cry like a baby at the end of Field of Dreams when Kevin Costner asks his dad to play catch. Needless to say, I cannot wait to share those same memories with Reed. (God forbid if he does not grow up to be an athlete, he at least will NOT throw like a girl if I can help it!)

I’m a sucker for the moment, so for this year’s opening of baseball season, I took the opportunity to dress Reed in his first Houston Astros outfit, courtesy of Aunt Beverly. We even invited Aunts Beverly and Britany over to watch the game and eat dinner (baseball is a family thing, you see). The game and the get-together was much more for my benefit, but if the kid grows up to love baseball too, he’ll certainly appreciate this picture with Pops and his first baseball merch.

Easter

Easter weekend was a kid-filled event this year… and ours sat in his car seat for most of it. All the hoopla was surrounding our group of friends and all their kids that are now walkin, talkin, full-blown kids.

On Saturday we wet to an Easter party hosted by some friends where there were about 15-20 kids under the age of 7 and a backyard FULL of plastic eggs. I swear an elementary school bus unloaded there. It was madness at times, but we were there for the kids so we kept it all in perspective. Reed was a obviously a spectator this year, but rest assured, he has already plotted his plan of attack come next year (or maybe the year after). Nonetheless, we had a great time and even got his picture with the Easter Bunny.

Sunday was family time. We went to our usual 9:30 service and then The Reasonovers came to our house for brunch. It was simple and sweet. That gave us a bit of time before we met my family and the Baldwin side at Mama B’s for dinner.

Zoo Trip

Holy week was a great week for the Baldwin family.  Not only is it Holy Week and my favorite week of the year, but since we had bible study Tuesday, and then church Thursday, Friday and Sunday we spent lots of time with all of our friends.  It almost felt like FIESTA week in high school.  Everyday is another “play date” with your friends (only now that includes kids too!!)  Tuesday we had a traditional Messianic Seder meal at the Knights house.  Thursday after church we went to Ryan’s for game night.  Then Friday morning it was the zoo!!!

Reed and I went to the Zoo on Good Friday with all the girls and his future friends.  The San Antonio Zoo is a great attraction to take kids to because parking is free, close and always has open spots.  Plus, the season pass is only $50 for a family.  So, we went to the zoo with some friends and bought our season pass.

What started out as a trip with 3 mommies and 3 kids turned into an awesome group of 6 mommies, 7 kids, 5 strollers (and 2 kids in utero!)  Anyone who knows me knows I’m a morning person so I was pushing for a 9am start to the trip and I’m so grateful everyone else agreed.  At the beginning of the morning the kids were free to run around and play with each other with all the mommies watching all the kids.  By the time we left at noon it was getting too crowded for comfort.  The zoo was getting packed and there were a bunch of older kids pushing and running.  After 3 hours of seeing all the animals and playing with their friends the kids were ready to ride the train and then go home for a nap.

Reed slept through the entire trip and never even opened his eyes until I took him out of his stroller for the group picture.  We are hoping to go again soon with Randy.  Hopefully we can get Reed to sit in the Baby Bjorn (haven’t been successful at that one yet, he just screams) and then he might actually see some of the zoo!!!

Thanks to all the ladies (Missie, Danielle, Megan, Leslie, and Lisa) for the great play day at the zoo!!!  We can’t wait to do it again soon.

First night in the crib

Reed is 5 weeks old today…and he slept in his crib for the first time last night!!  He has been sleeping in his pack ‘n play in the living room for the past 4 weeks, but we had to move the pack ‘n play Monday so the delivery guys could get the new stove in place.  He slept in our room (still in the pack ‘n play) Monday night and we realized its time for him to move to the crib.  Luckily our house is small, so it isn’t much farther to walk to his nursery.

After bible study last night we put him down in his nursery and he did great!!  There is no doubt the pack ‘n play can’t be very comfortable.  I think knowing the crib would be more comfortable for him was a good incentive for us to make the move.  Let’s hope he keeps loving his room!!

I really love this life

I officially love being at home with Reed.  It took me a few weeks, but we have gotten into a good little routine, and now I don’t know what I will do when its time to go back to work in a few short weeks.  My friend Brittney is also a new mom and she said it perfectly…being a stay at home mom just allows you to have a slower paced life.  You still stay busy and have lots to do, but you get to do it on your time.  No alarm clocks ringing at 5am, no traffic to fight, and the best parts are running errands in the middle of the day and walking outside anytime you want.  These are all little luxuries, but they add up to a great life.  Last night Randy walked in the back door after his grueling 5 minute walk of a commute and said, “I really love this life.”  I have to agree dear!!  I get to spend all day playing with Reed and being a relaxed version of myself.  Randy walks in the door to a happy baby, a clean house, and dinner.  If only we could find a way to double Randy’s salary or one of us fall into a bunch of money so I didn’t have to go back!!

I still have 7 weeks at home and we are planning to enjoy every minute!!  Maybe one day I will find a part-time position where I can have the best of both worlds!!
