Vermont: Up where the leaves change colors and there are all four seasons

img_5378This has been the “mother of all summers” in south Texas, according to one San Antonio weather man. The endless 100 degree days had beaten us all down to the point that we were experiencing true cabin fever for the mere fact that it was simply too stinkin’ hot to do ANYTHING outside. So, we took the chance to use some Southwest Airlines tickets that Julie has accumulated, and go somewhere we had never been before, and preferably North.

Before I get into the details of the trip, Reed had some notable firsts!! He started army crawling by using one arm and the opposite leg to inch his way toward anything he is determined to touch. The shinier it is, the more determined he is. He also can’t seem to resist anything that is paper. I suppose it is the crinkle and the light weight that makes it attractive to him.

He is also babbling. He used to either squeal, laugh or yell when he wanted to make noise. Now it is a much lower volume, steady mumble and it makes us smile every time, especially when in the car and completely unprovoked.

He seemed to start both of these on the same day. It’s like he just woke up one day and was tired of laying around and had something to say about it. 🙂

Sept 24 to Sept 30

We flew into Manchester, NH and rented a car to drive to Stowe, VT. There, we had a condo lined up through a rent-by-owner deal. We didn’t know that this condo was actually part of a larger resort where there were exceptional amenities…. On top of that, after checking out the comparable rooms in the resort to our condo, we were paying about 1/3 the price!!

Our plans once we got there was to have NO plans. We were going to be there in Stowe for 5 days and we wanted to completely go with the flow. We didn’t even plan to go out to eat a lot. Julie really looked forward to the small markets and the variety of foods they offer from the local farms.

This of course was also Reed’s first plane ride. The kid had his own suitcase full of stuff. We even checked the carseat base to have with us in the rental. We then checked his carrier at the gate and held him in our laps. He did wonderful and slept on all four flights. He did get fussy a few times, but only because he has been fighting harder to go to sleep. We laid him down across our laps, with his head on Julie’s leg and his body across my lap, and he was down for the count. (This required some strategy to hit the bathroom beforehand in order to commit to a few hours without interruption.) Julie did a great job timing his meals to feed him right when we sat in our seats so that he would be fat and happy for the flights. She even did something I thought I would never see… she nursed him right there in public (with the appropriate hooter-hider, of course)!

We spent the first morning in a coffee house in downtown Stowe. It is off the main drive so a lot of locals go there. We were fortunate to the meet the owner (after she apologized for no changing table in the bathrooms), and she gave us some advice on the walking/biking path that winds around town and to go see the town of Burlington on Lake Champlain. We added those to our list and went back to that coffee house several times.

One thing we did want to do was go pick fresh apples at an orchard. The one we found was over in Cabot, VT, just about an hour drive each way from Stowe. We had no problem finding the place, but when we turned down a dirt road and went up the hill, we found signs that advertised the orchard, but there was hardly anything that I would consider welcoming for visitors to come and pick apples. I swear this place used pictures from another orchard on their website. We did drive farther up the hill and found some of the most scenic landscape that we had seen yet. I left Julie and Reed to nap in the car and I took a walk with my camera.

On the way back we did stop at a unique farm stand that was unattended and just asked that you write a list of what you took and a slot to leave the cash. I love the un-jaded sincerity that is often lost in urban populations.

Sunday it poured on us ALL DAY. It was a blessing because we were ready to take a break from driving and sight-seeing. We opted to veg the entire day and curl up to some chicken pot pie and football… heaven!! The only thing we left to do was a quick tour of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory just up the road. Honestly, I felt like I was cheating on BlueBell the whole time!!

Monday cleared up enough for us to get back outside and take some more pictures. We found the walking/biking path and also took a trip over to the Trapp family lodge (the family that inspired The Sound of Music).

Tuesday we packed up and headed back to Manchester, NH, where we stayed overnight to be close the airport for the flight back on Wednesday.

We were thankful to not have any real issues on the trip. It is certainly more work to travel with an infant, but I think the older he gets from now on the more difficult it would be. Not until he can carry his own luggage do I think it would be any easier. So, I’m glad we took this trip when we did. It was the perfect time of year to see New England, and I would highly recommend Stowe to anyone looking for a place in the Northeast to visit.

So Behind…

You would not believe how much has changed/occurred in our lives in the last 3 weeks.  All of these things feel like they are worthy of individual posts, but I just don’t have the energy to do it.

I spent my first week away from Reed.  I was working in Katy for an audit and couldn’t figure out how to have childcare during the day, so Reed stayed at home with Randy.  I’m still nursing him so I had to pump extra bottles for weeks in advance.  The part I didn’t account for was the fact that I would have to keep pumping (and storing) while I was in Houston.  What a pain!  All in all Reed was fine and I was fine.  Randy is so involved already that he had no problems at all.  Reed was in very capable hands.

I sold the XTerra.  I bought that car right after graduating college and it was the first car I had bought for myself, and the first new car I had ever owned.  It was SO good to me.  I owned it from June 2002 to September 2009 and put 2 sets of tires, 1 new battery, and a set of brake pads on it.  That’s it.  It was a sad day when it left our driveway.

I got a new job.  I’m still working at Tesoro, but I’m finally out of audit.  Some people love audit and want to do it forever, but I am not one of them.  It’s a great starting place and you get to learn tons about the company as well as meet lots of people, but I never felt like I was contributing to the operation of the company.  I really needed that part.  The way I got my new job is the best part.  There had been an analyst job posted on our intranet, but I didn’t apply for it.  A mommy friend of mine really pushed me to meet with Louie (the Director) and see if I would be interested.  I tried to meet with him the Friday I was to return from Houston, but we didn’t finish on time and I wasn’t back.  I met with Louie on Tuesday Sept. 8.  He urged me to apply and said they had already selected a candidate but that if I was interested in applying he would re-open the position.  He did, and I did the same day.  I interviewed on Thursday and was offered the job on Friday.  Needless to say I accepted.  I started the new job right before we went to Vermont for vacation and can’t wait to really get started!!

I will make a separate post about Vermont and the new things Reed is doing.

New Things Everyday

Last Friday Reed gave his first kiss.  And the lucky recipient was my little sister Diana Beth.  When I was home on maternity leave Diana spent 3-4 days a week with us just hanging out and playing.  Since I have been back at work and she is back in school Reed doesn’t see her as much.  She was leaving Friday night and he intentionally pulled her mouth to his and gave her a big slobbery open mouth kiss.  Disgusting, but so sweet!!  The best part is that her birthday was the next day and it was the best birthday present!!

Yesterday I picked Reed up from Randy’s mom’s house after work.  I picked him up from his exersaucer and he hugged me for a minute.  Then he looked around and decided he wanted to say bye to Granny B because he reached out for her.  That was the first time he has done that too.

Strangely, my feelings weren’t hurt that those two milestones happened to someone else.   Both Diana and Barbara love him so much that it made me happy he showed them his love too.  (But he better start loving on his mother a little more!!!!)

Southpaw?

Reed has started to show a lot of favoritism to his left hand when he grabs toys and then shakes them up and down in excitement. He almost always does this with his left hand, and has even shifted an item from his right to his left only to then shake it up and down.

We know it is very early to tell, as we have heard that this kind of development isn’t usually significant until about 12 months, but we also know that “lefthandedness” runs in both families. However, I think Reed would be the first MALE lefty. We shall see….

River Mice

img_5015Last weekend was our annual Comal river trip with The Pikes. Jim and Sarah come in from Houston every year and we converge on a condo somewhere on the Comal river for a little tubing, a few libations and lots of relaxation. We started this tradition back before either of us was married, so it has been a steady progression for both couple as our lives change, and it has been great to stay in touch. For the most part it feels as if we have lived parallel lives: An accountant, a computer geek and now a child.

Kate Pike is actually the first of Reed’s friends that we announced here on the blog. She is coming up on a year now and has certainly become a sassy little girl. She is VERY mobile on the ground, so Julie and I had to watch our step around the kitchen and living room. Reed enjoyed playing with her toys that she brought, but occasionally she would remind us that they were, in fact, HER toys. She did interact very well with Reed and he could interact with her a little bit since he is sitting up now.

We spent some time down on the river, but having the kids certainly changed our game plan from years past. Friday and Saturday afternoon we just hung out on the river bank and watched the kids get used to the cold water of the spring-fed Comal. Kate wouldn’t have ANY part of it. Reed, however, we setup in his float in the shallowest water, and he just sat there… watching everything around him, and paying no mind to the water temp or even the blazing sun. We coated him in sunscreen and stuck a hat on him and he was good to go. When we pulled him out, the poor kid had purple-ish feet and wrinkled toes, but he seemed to be just fine. Sarah and Julie did pull the “girl time” card and took off down the river to get some tubing in, leaving Jim and I with the kids.

We had a few episodes with the kids during the weekend that was a testament to the fact that these trips will never be the same again as they were when we were living the “DINK” life. However, it will only get MORE fun when Reed and Kate (and siblings) start splashing around and playing in the river like only kids know how.

Sitting Up

img_4979We started with the nanny, Kelsey, about 2 weeks ago. She speaks about as much English as I do Spanish, so it is a challenge when I don’t have either one of the other couple there to translate for us. However, she is great with the kids and took to Reed immediately. (who wouldn’t?)

Anyway, Kelsey took Reed into the play room on the first morning that Julie and I dropped him off. Without even asking what he was capable of, she set him on the ground and sat behind him. He was sitting all on his own!! Julie and I were dumbfounded because we had not even TRIED to sit him up yet, and here he was, sitting all on his own (although very wobbly still)! Needless to say we were immediately pleased with Kelsey even though she really had not done anything yet… I guess it was just a realization that allowing Reed to have other influences in his life was going to make him grow in ways that we would not have done ourselves.

Now, with this new found independence, when we set Reed on the ground, there is a good chance he is going to get SUPER excited and squeal at the top of his lungs. Most of the time it’s so bad it makes him cough. I swear he is going to lose his voice over it sometime. He is certainly more entertaining and interactive when he is sitting on his own.

Disclaimer: Brag Post

img_4889In the spirit of not being one of those women that always brags about how “fabulous” her kid is I don’t normally like to go on and on about how great I think my kid is.  Today I’m going to do it so that I remember how easy he makes our lives to compare against baby #2.  As far as I know all kids are like this. (Reed is 5 months, 3 weeks old. )

Reed doesn’t spit up.  Seriously.  Every now and then the child will spit up a mouthful if he has over eaten, but that’s it.  Up until a few weeks ago when we started him on solid foods he had never even worn a bib.  Now that he eats solid food he needs a bib, but once he’s out of the high chair the bib comes off.  I never understood why all the diaper bag lists online say to pack an extra change of clothes for you and the baby in the diaper bag.  Not once has he spit up on me in public where I needed to change my shirt or his outfit.

The child doesn’t cry.  Several times a week we are asked by strangers and friends alike “is he always like this?”  The answer is yes.  He really is always like that.  Reed definitely has Randy’s laid back, happy personality.  He likes to play by himself and really likes to roll around on the ground on his blanket.  All alone.  He also loves to play in his exersaucer (thank you Swayzes for lending it to us!!).  He will entertain himself in there for 30 minutes to an hour before he gets tired of it.

Finally to the best part, sleep.  Reed loves his crib and loves to sleep (just like his mommy).  At night I try to feed him one last time around 9-9:30.  Many nights he is wide awake right after I feed him.  I change his diaper and put him in his crib wide awake.  I will hear him for 10 minutes or so rolling around, and then nothing.  I go back in to check on him and he will be sound asleep.  He does this almost every night.  I can probably count on one hand the number of times he has woken up in the night (since he started sleeping through the night around 7 weeks).  He then wakes up somewhere between 5 and 6am to eat again.  When I’m done feeding him he goes right back to sleep until Randy wakes him up at 8 to head to the nanny.  He takes a 30-60 minute morning nap and a several hour afternoon nap (again, he really likes to put himself to sleep).  Then we start it all over again.

Reed, you are a wonderful kid and you make us so very happy!!!

Jacob Landon Edmonds

img_4927Of all the babies we have welcomed into the world recently, we are happy to announce that we finally have another member of our extended family to welcome… Jacob Landon Edmonds. Patricia, my cousin, and her husband, Jeff, had a scheduled induction on August 19th. After a full day of pitocin and even a little fever, Jacob came out just before midnight, weighing 8lbs 6oz and a tad over 21 inches long. Jacob is in good hands with his older sister Katharine, who anxiously waited with Grandma and Grandpa to see her new baby brother.

They were all doing well when we got to stop by and say hello (except for Reed, who had to stay in the waiting room by hospital standards). Jacob was born into a family of Longhorns, so they made sure to have him wrapped up in his best burnt orange when we showed up. We did find it amusing that he peed on the t.u. outfit before Patricia could get him dressed in it. We don’t hold it against you Jacob, we love you all the same!

Wild Man

Reed has been learning to eat solid foods the last few weeks and it really is fun.  We of course startd with rice cereal and oatmeal and are following the rules of introducing one food every 3-4 days to make sure he isn’t allergic to anything.  The really fun part is that I’m making his baby food.  It truly is so easy that I can’t imagine I will stop.

The first time Ya-Ya fed Reed oatmeal she reported to me that he “ate it like a wild man”!  I just loved that expression.  He still loves his cereal and applesauce but wasn’t so fond of avocado or green beans.  Yesterday on my day off I roasted a butternut squash and cooked peas.  He seriously ate the squash like a wild man.  I have never seen him so excited about food before.  He probably ate 3 or 4 tablespoons and would have kept going.

As a sidenote, I am finally reaching the emotional stage.  I kept expecting to be weepy as he got bigger and started changing or at least when I went back to work.  I got nostalgic, but never weepy.  For some reason the emotions have hit me like a tidal wave the last 3 days.  Every morning when I go in his room and see that he is wide awake but just laying there quietly waiting for us to be ready to get him I start to tear up.  This is followed by a prayer of praise because I never imagined I would get such a wonderful baby and definitely never imagind I would love him THIS much.  I love you little boy!!!

5 months and so much more

img_4795Somewhere around mid-July, Reed turned into this fully-interactive, crowd-pleasing baby boy that soaks up the attention and throws out smiles like they are going out of style. Seriously, we’ve heard from the day he was born that this kid was “cute”, but now he is starting to show a lot more personality to back it up. We are also continually amazed at his even-tempered nature that keeps him calm in even the most stressful situations.

The past month has shown a lot of developments that make him a much more interactive baby. He is rolling over, first from back to front and now recently from front to back. We put him on his activity mat on the floor in the nursery, and come back to find him several feet and degrees off of his original spot. He is reaching for things now, so toys and items less than a foot away are very attainable. He will also notice us across the room and smile or laugh if we provoke him, but often he just does it on his own.

As for eating, he is now on solids, starting with rice cereal and applesauce, and now we have been into oatmeal and carrots. I gave him some of my sweet potatoes once (since it already looked like baby food) and he loved that as well… so that will probably be next. We have a high-chair now that he does very well in and it will soon completely replace the Bumbo – his fat legs are simply getting too big for it.

This has been a great month for us as the summer comes to an end. The kid certainly spent more time than normal in the pool, which was necessary in this south Texas drought. Now Ya-Ya has gone back to work, and we will soon start up with a nanny, so the quality time with the grandmas will reduce significantly; but nonetheless, it was a great summer and we are forever grateful to the support of our families during Reed’s initial months of development.

Here are some great pics over the last few weeks.
