Reed’s 2nd Birthday

Cars!!

Reed is in love with anything that moves. Cars, trucks, tractors, trains, planes… and BIG trucks. So, it was a no-brainer when we thought of that for 2nd birthday theme. Julie wanted to make the cake again, which she did such an awesome job on last year.

The only think we needed was some entertainment for few toddlers. Last year it was bubbles, which would have been just a as fun this year, but it doesn’t have much in common with cars. How about building a race track? I give Julie credit for the idea, and it was no-brainer as well. I built a straight track that took me back to the “Pinewood Derby” days in Cub Scouts. I think it was just as fun for me to build and play with as it was for Reed!

We were very fortunate to have a special guest in town for Reed’s birthday as well. Jim and Sarah Pike made the trip with their red-haired daughter, Kate, and 6-week old boy, John. Reed and Kate have been buddies since before they can both remember, and it’s really fun to see them recognize each other now.

We had lots of fun and the track was a hit. Even little Caleb Swayze stepped-out of his shyness to play with the cars on the track.

New family pet

We have a new family pet… a parrot. This parrot isn’t the kind that flies or even one that needs to be kept in a cage. We do still have to feed it and clean it, but that is not the part we concern ourselves with. The best AND worst part about our new parrot? You guessed it… repeats EVERYTHING!

Reed’s vocabulary has really blossomed over the last month. When once he was too shy or timid to try talking, he is now attempting everything that we say to him… or around him. Julie got burned in classic style this morning when we were talking across the bedroom while I was getting ready for work. I mentioned something that caught her by surprise, and she responded with the traditionally girly response of “Shut… UP!” Reed didn’t miss a beat and chimed right in, repeatedly… “shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up”. We both busted out while Reed kept repeating since we gave him such a great reaction. 🙂

Among some of our favorites in his vocab, are the ones that he uses every day as part of his routine.

He as a [cereal] “bar” and “manana” for breakfast almost every morning. Up until recently, after we sit him down in his chair to eat, we feed the dog by letting him “ou-side” in the “brrrr-cold”.

Getting dressed in the mornings can be knock-down drag-out fight, or it can be a vocabulary lesson, you can never tell what the mood will be. Sometimes as a form of persuasion/distraction, we will talk about getting dressed to go “ou-side” and get in “Daddy’s truck” (which he LOVES to play in the Driver’s seat). Pointing out “Reed’s shoes” and “Daddy’s shoes” is where he first started assigning ownership. Now he will go through everyone’s attire and make sure that everyone has their assigned garments.

For the longest time, Reed used the word, “Ba”, for any large vehicle. I couldn’t get him to say “truck” for the life of me. On the other hand, “car” is one of the first words that he has enunciated very well from the beginning… all other words seem to fall off at the end, like “baa” for ‘bath’.

Roll call at the dinner table is another form of assigning ownership, but sometimes Reed will call out people that are not there, like “BB”, “Duke” and “Ya-Ya”. Diana Beth (DB), David and Laurie have all had their time at our dinner table, and according to Reed, each have their assigned seats.

The list could goes on forever and changes every day. Like I said, he is constantly trying new words and syllables. But, it is very hard to explain in writing how Reed’s expressions and inflection can turn a normal word or phrase on it’s head. I can’t do it justice here for you, and it’s hard to catch those moments on video. So, we do our best to enjoy our little parrot while he is here with us.

All Boy

Not even two years old and Reed is very much a little boy. He loves to be outside and get his hands dirty as well as follow me around and help wherever I will let him. Here are just a few picture of him puddle-stomping out on the back patio as well as a big box that I cut our doors and windows for his first “fort”. He loves cars, trucks, trains, planes… just about anything that goes.

Mr. Fixit, Jr

Reed LOVES to help me when the tools come out. We even got him the Handy Manny Toolbox for Christmas so he could have his own set. At first my power drill scared him, but he was always intrigued. Once he got over his initial fear he now gets VERY excited when I rev the drill a few times.

I replaced the garbage disposal for this year’s Valentine’s Day gift to Julie (kitchen stuff seems to be our theme for this occasion… and we are married). So, Reed jumped right in and climbed under the already-crowded kitchen sink cabinet.

First month as a family of four

The friends that have gone before us by adding a second child to the family have openly admitted, “It’s a freakin’ circus.” Well, we’ve had our first experience with the Baldwin Traveling Roadshow this past month once we added Alison to the family and got home from the hospital.

This is certainly a season of our lives that is temporary, but can be the most challenging on us emotionally and physically. It can also be the most rewarding.

While Julie and I have to work on our communication and teamwork when juggling the kids, we have also seen how Reed has responded very well to his little sister. He is generally compliant to us when she needs our attention more than he does. Challenges and rewards are the name of the game for all parents and families… you just hope you get more of the latter to keep you going.

Snow Day!!

It snowed here yesterday, just enough to cover the ground and shut down the city. Northerners laugh at us when this happens, but they take it for granted that their city can maintain the roadways in icy conditions to keep them safe enough to drive on (ie: salt and street sweepers and snow plows). Our southern cities don’t invest in that expensive equipment in order to dust it off every few years. Instead, we shut down the cities and make all the Yankees green with envy when we stay home and get to play. 🙂

Alison’s newborn photos

My one gift for our anniversary AND Christmas was a new lens for our Canon DSLR camera. It’s use for professional-style photos has certainly fallen off since I first got the itch with my new toy. The best fix for that issue… a new accessory! I took these using my new 28-135mm lens. Our new house has a room that is very bright with natural light, so it was perfect to set up a makeshift studio. Ali was my first model!

Christmas/New Years

We realized not too long ago that when Reed gets home and is cranky after his full day at daycare, it’s because he gets bored at home and had nothing to do or play with. It was so bad that he refused to come inside from the car, and wanted to stay in the garage to ride in the stroller or his wagon. Julie and I are not the type to buy toys for him on random occasions, so the last new toy he got was for his 1st birthday…. in March. Call me crazy, but I think the kid has had a little bit of mental and physical development since then, and his infant/toddler toys just don’t cut it for him anymore.

So, this Christmas we planned to make a concerted effort to beef-up his toy box and plan for toys that he will grow into. He has taken a huge interest in cars, trucks and trains. He also has an obsession with any type of ball sport.

This was also the first Christmas in our new home. We have been extremely happy with the additional space and couldn’t wait to actually have a place for a Christmas tree! As silly as it sounds, it was one of those things that we were so acutely aware of in the last house that it was important for us in the next one.

We had a an extremely restful vacation between Christmas and New Years. Julie and I were both off of work the entire week, so we would send Reed to daycare for the majority of the day and get a few things done around the house. The “stay-cation” was much needed R&R time for us, and well-timed before Baby Alison comes.

Our family will never be the same after this holiday season. We anxiously await Alison’s arrival, but we are not too quick to let go of this time we have as just the three of us.

Alison’s Nursery

The nursery is complete! It had a few changes in the beginning (like blue to pink), but now it’s done and it looks first-class.

We especially want to thank my Mom, who gave her time and talent to do the murals on the wall. When Julie found the inspiration that matched the final bedding she had picked, there was a bit of concern that we would be able to follow-through with such a detailed idea. We have enough trouble putting stripes on the wall! Knowing that my Mom had done the mural in the house we grew up in, and that painting was a passion she rarely got to indulge, I realized she was the perfect person for the project.

For Mom and Julie, it was a Win-Win. Julie got the storybook nursery, and my Mom got to exercise her passion as well as contribute to her first granddaughter’s new room. We can’t thank her enough for the way it turned out… we have been proud to show it off, and we are sure that Alison will be at home.

Reed LOVES the Zoo now

We both took the day off last Friday to get a few things done, but to also take Reed out early for a trip to the Zoo. We have seen him take a big interest in animals recently, and even start to make the sounds, even if he can’t tell us what it is… like “meow” for cat, even though he has never even TRIED to say “cat”… and “hop” for rabbit. Those are just a few examples.

It was time to take him back to the zoo, where previously he was only a mild spectator in his stroller, and gave the animals only a passing glance. This time was much different. He was engaged and excited to see real, live animals, and so many varieties.

Our first real stop was the grizzly bear. He was out and about, and almost posing for those that were there to see. Reed latched onto the sight and could not get enough. We spent a good amount of time there taking pictures since the bear was such a willing participant. However, when we pushed Reed to leave, he wouldn’t have it… he through a little fit that we were moving on from Mr. Bear. We got him over to the next exhibit and slowly caught-on… there was much more to see! We set him down for this one, and after only a few minutes he was bored with it and asked, “More?”

It was an awesome day for a zoo visit. There were 25% of the people that were normally there, and there were NO schools visiting. That meant that letting Reed walk beside us on his own was stress-free and easy as a walk in the park. I HIGHLY recommend this timing for anyone interested in the Zoo.

I’d have to say that Reed’s favorite for the day was the fish in the Hippo aquarium. He could get right up to the glass and felt the need to talk to them all when they swam by. I got some great video footage that I have included below.

Great day trip and the timing and weather couldn’t have been better. We will never have just the three of us again, so times like these are getting more and more special as we look forward to Alison joining us.

ps: There were a few poopage stories that MUST be told… The hippo seemed to be pooping full hay bails, and the rhino’s stench hit us INSTANTLY, even though we were 50+ feet away (we had to grab Reed and run from it)!!
