Father's Day 2010

My second Father’s Day was not one I would care to remember. I came down with a stomach virus at about 5am and spent the next 6 hours making trips to the bathroom for more than one reason… I was down for the count.

Needless to say, I missed out on the Father’s Day plans that we had to spend at my parent’s house with Mama B and Papa Roy as well. Instead, Julie took Reed to her parents to spend it with her dad, as well as allow me to get more rest with a quiet house.

I am blessed to have had such a great First Father’s Day, because this one was not one I care to remember.

Month 15

This was a big month of changes for Reed. On the development side, he has pushed out around 6 teeth in the span of only 3 weeks! He’s been a constant drooler, as seen by the constant ring around his neckline of any shirt he wears. He is also pushing his limits on stairs by taking little steps up without the aide of a handhold or even bending over to step up. He is doing the same thing going down little steps, but that is a little uneasy for us to watch since it is inevitable he will bite it one time… but he IS pretty resilient.

The biggest change for Reed this month was his move from the nanny to full-time daycare. We had already discussed the change for the fall, but the nanny’s own situation had changed where she would need to leave by 4:45pm everyday. That just wasn’t going to work for either of us working parents, so we had to jump on the situation and find what was available. Luv ‘N Care is literally right across the street from our neighborhood. It was our first choice of 3 options, and they had an immediate opening for his age range. We made the move and gave the notice to the nanny that we would be leaving after one more week. The nanny was very sad to see Reed go, but we took pictures of her and the boys, and framed them for a “thank you” gift to her.

We also had to inform Granny B about the change… you see she has grown quite accustomed to watching her first grandchild about once a week, so we knew this was going to be the hardest bombshell to drop. Her response: “Well, you are not paying me, so couldn’t you just keep bringing him here one day a week?” Not so fast, Mom…. I mean Grandma…. sorry. She did understand and knew it wouldn’t last forever…. but then she can always just wait for the next one to come around.

Happy FIRST Birthday

IMG_7766.JPGMonth 12 has been quite an exciting one with Reed. Walking, curiosity and a short attention span add-up to non-stop entertainment around the house. We swear that he is walking for the sake of walking as he meanders through the house and changes direction sometimes in mid-stride. Those that have dangled cowbells on their toddlers to always know where they are… I can see the logic now… if he is not babbling as he wanders, it’s always a guess if he is standing right behind you.

As for recent changes, we have stopped giving him a pacifier, except when we put him down to bed. We had to team up with the other family that he shares a nanny with so that he wouldn’t have that influence from the other boy either. It turns out it has been quite a success for both boys and we are glad he is not dependent on it.

We have also cut WAY back on bottles. We have not given him a bottle in the morning in several months, but recently stopped relying on them at night to put him down. Instead, a sippy-cup of whole milk and a pacifier, and he is content. He will usually babble for a while in his crib after we have put him down, but give him about 10 minutes and he is out. We’ll go back in to cover him up in whatever funny position he ended up in (usually knees tucked under in the corner, but lately has been using something as a pillow).

He is showing his (mother’s) personality at the dinner table now (hehe). When he does not want something he will scrunch his face and push it away. The same goes for when he is tired of eating a particular food and is ready for something else. Nothing pissed Julie off more than when he  started spitting something out intentionally. He prefers to feed himself (of course), and also knows that Logan will scoop up anything he throws down.

Now for the birthday party…

IMG_7820.JPGMost that know Julie, know that she loves hostessing. How much more special of an occasion can you get than your firstborn’s first birthday party?! It’s a right of passage that every new mother gets to plan it, and planning means thinking of the theme MONTHS in advance… or is that just Julie? I’m not sure… Whatever the case, it was very important to her to and she took it on: the cake, the cupcakes, the decor, the goodies, the invitations… all handmade.

IMG_7850.JPGThe theme: Bath Time (Reed’s favorite part of the day). Rubber duckies everywhere! We had balloons for decor since Reed carries them around whenever possible. We used bubbles as accents, including bubble wrap as place-mats!

IMG_7919.JPGWe invited all the boys that were born on either side of Reed. Three of the four boys were born within 2 weeks of each other in Dec 2008. It was amazing to see their differences in development, as well as see them all thrown into our playroom to duke it out (for our entertainment of course). I truly hope that these boys stay friends through the years… how cool would it be to see them grow up together!

IMG_7994.JPGThe party was a success and we have made a full recovery. Julie did a great job and the cake tasted perfect! We are equally excited that it is over now, but it’s bittersweet since it is likely the last party we will throw in this house.

Reed's first love lives in Houston

IMG_7364.JPGWe finally made a trip to Houston to see a few people that we’ve needed to come see for some time now. The bumper crop of babies from only a year ago are all growing up to be such fun and entertaining toddlers. Reed has lots of friends is age in many cities, so we just have to set aside time with no other agenda to come and visit.Jim and Sarah Pike put us up for the first night and had Wade and Chelsea Egmon come over with their new boy, Caleb. Jim and Julie’s friend, James came over also with his girlfriend, Ryann. James is visiting from overseas and it is a rare occasion that he is here, so the timing worked out great.

The entertainment for the first part of the night and the morning was Reed’s infatuation with Kate! We have never seen Reed take such an interest in another child, to the point that he follows them around and aggressively grasps onto them every chance he gets. It was hilarious to see Kate react with confusion at first and then utter frustration when she couldn’t get away from Reed. At one point, Reed has her pinned in the corner, next to the window where they were both starring out.

Kate eventually warmed up to Reed, as you can see in the video below. They played well together and we look forward to the next time we can visit the Pikes.

The next stop was the Braniffs. Heather and Julie have been friends since high school and Heather has boy named Riley that is only 2 weeks older than Reed. We wanted them to meet and Julie also wanted to come visit Heather and her family.

The other reason for me to come to Houston was to see my cousin, Clint. Clint has been incarcerated for the last 11 1/2 years and after living in a halfway house for some time after his release, he is now living back with his Mom and Dad. It is wonderful for our entire family to have him finally out of confinement. I was pretty excited to see him again, but I was even more excited to introduce him to meet Julie and Reed.

Watching Football

Lots of women say they “like football”. Many of them even have a favorite team. Julie, however, is in a league that few women could claim.

We went over to a friend’s house earlier this year to watch the UT-Texas Tech game. It was a prime time game, so Reed made it through 3 quarters and was ready for bed. We packed up and headed home to catch the final quarter.

Now, we had been watching the game on a nice 52″ flat screen TV. The picture was crisp and clear, and the field had never looked so green. This was not the case when we got home. It was as if Julie had actually seen a side-by-side comparison, and said, “Our TV sucks!” I, of course, knew this already, but we don’t watch a lot of TV in our house so it was never a priority to us. All that seemed to go out the window in an instant.

We started talking about upgrading and that Christmas was coming up. We had gone this long without it, why not wait just a little bit more? Julie’s response to that was one that I will treasure for a long time (and validated one of the reasons I married her!) Instead of opting for any logical reason to wait, she said…. “I just don’t want the entire football season to go by without a new TV!”

I kissed her immediately. Best… Wife… Ever.

Freestanding!!

img_6621It’s been about 2 weeks since Reed first let go of whatever he was holding onto while he was standing up. Both of us were there to see it happen and we were ecstatic to say the least. It kinda freaked him out like when he gets scared at sporting events when everyone starts screaming, but we calmed him pretty quick and let him know that we were happy about what he did. The kid loves the spotlight, so once he caught on that it got him even MORE attention, he never looked back.

Now, he almost always stands up against something with the intention of letting go… and it’s usually in one fluid motion, no pause. Once he lets go, he holds his hands way out and the smile goes from ear to ear. Then he starts exciting himself and usually looses his balance at that point. He’s certainly not afraid of falling down anymore, as he is getting MUCH braver and taking more risks during transitions. Julie says she saw him take a step, but almost by accident since he came crashing down after it.

We know it’s only a matter of time before those first real steps. I’m actually wondering if it will be before the new year!!

Vermont: Up where the leaves change colors and there are all four seasons

img_5378This has been the “mother of all summers” in south Texas, according to one San Antonio weather man. The endless 100 degree days had beaten us all down to the point that we were experiencing true cabin fever for the mere fact that it was simply too stinkin’ hot to do ANYTHING outside. So, we took the chance to use some Southwest Airlines tickets that Julie has accumulated, and go somewhere we had never been before, and preferably North.

Before I get into the details of the trip, Reed had some notable firsts!! He started army crawling by using one arm and the opposite leg to inch his way toward anything he is determined to touch. The shinier it is, the more determined he is. He also can’t seem to resist anything that is paper. I suppose it is the crinkle and the light weight that makes it attractive to him.

He is also babbling. He used to either squeal, laugh or yell when he wanted to make noise. Now it is a much lower volume, steady mumble and it makes us smile every time, especially when in the car and completely unprovoked.

He seemed to start both of these on the same day. It’s like he just woke up one day and was tired of laying around and had something to say about it. 🙂

Sept 24 to Sept 30

We flew into Manchester, NH and rented a car to drive to Stowe, VT. There, we had a condo lined up through a rent-by-owner deal. We didn’t know that this condo was actually part of a larger resort where there were exceptional amenities…. On top of that, after checking out the comparable rooms in the resort to our condo, we were paying about 1/3 the price!!

Our plans once we got there was to have NO plans. We were going to be there in Stowe for 5 days and we wanted to completely go with the flow. We didn’t even plan to go out to eat a lot. Julie really looked forward to the small markets and the variety of foods they offer from the local farms.

This of course was also Reed’s first plane ride. The kid had his own suitcase full of stuff. We even checked the carseat base to have with us in the rental. We then checked his carrier at the gate and held him in our laps. He did wonderful and slept on all four flights. He did get fussy a few times, but only because he has been fighting harder to go to sleep. We laid him down across our laps, with his head on Julie’s leg and his body across my lap, and he was down for the count. (This required some strategy to hit the bathroom beforehand in order to commit to a few hours without interruption.) Julie did a great job timing his meals to feed him right when we sat in our seats so that he would be fat and happy for the flights. She even did something I thought I would never see… she nursed him right there in public (with the appropriate hooter-hider, of course)!

We spent the first morning in a coffee house in downtown Stowe. It is off the main drive so a lot of locals go there. We were fortunate to the meet the owner (after she apologized for no changing table in the bathrooms), and she gave us some advice on the walking/biking path that winds around town and to go see the town of Burlington on Lake Champlain. We added those to our list and went back to that coffee house several times.

One thing we did want to do was go pick fresh apples at an orchard. The one we found was over in Cabot, VT, just about an hour drive each way from Stowe. We had no problem finding the place, but when we turned down a dirt road and went up the hill, we found signs that advertised the orchard, but there was hardly anything that I would consider welcoming for visitors to come and pick apples. I swear this place used pictures from another orchard on their website. We did drive farther up the hill and found some of the most scenic landscape that we had seen yet. I left Julie and Reed to nap in the car and I took a walk with my camera.

On the way back we did stop at a unique farm stand that was unattended and just asked that you write a list of what you took and a slot to leave the cash. I love the un-jaded sincerity that is often lost in urban populations.

Sunday it poured on us ALL DAY. It was a blessing because we were ready to take a break from driving and sight-seeing. We opted to veg the entire day and curl up to some chicken pot pie and football… heaven!! The only thing we left to do was a quick tour of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory just up the road. Honestly, I felt like I was cheating on BlueBell the whole time!!

Monday cleared up enough for us to get back outside and take some more pictures. We found the walking/biking path and also took a trip over to the Trapp family lodge (the family that inspired The Sound of Music).

Tuesday we packed up and headed back to Manchester, NH, where we stayed overnight to be close the airport for the flight back on Wednesday.

We were thankful to not have any real issues on the trip. It is certainly more work to travel with an infant, but I think the older he gets from now on the more difficult it would be. Not until he can carry his own luggage do I think it would be any easier. So, I’m glad we took this trip when we did. It was the perfect time of year to see New England, and I would highly recommend Stowe to anyone looking for a place in the Northeast to visit.

Check out the pictures below, but here is the Full Photo Gallery.

Southpaw?

Reed has started to show a lot of favoritism to his left hand when he grabs toys and then shakes them up and down in excitement. He almost always does this with his left hand, and has even shifted an item from his right to his left only to then shake it up and down.

We know it is very early to tell, as we have heard that this kind of development isn’t usually significant until about 12 months, but we also know that “lefthandedness” runs in both families. However, I think Reed would be the first MALE lefty. We shall see….

River Mice

img_5015Last weekend was our annual Comal river trip with The Pikes. Jim and Sarah come in from Houston every year and we converge on a condo somewhere on the Comal river for a little tubing, a few libations and lots of relaxation. We started this tradition back before either of us was married, so it has been a steady progression for both couple as our lives change, and it has been great to stay in touch. For the most part it feels as if we have lived parallel lives: An accountant, a computer geek and now a child.

Kate Pike is actually the first of Reed’s friends that we announced here on the blog. She is coming up on a year now and has certainly become a sassy little girl. She is VERY mobile on the ground, so Julie and I had to watch our step around the kitchen and living room. Reed enjoyed playing with her toys that she brought, but occasionally she would remind us that they were, in fact, HER toys. She did interact very well with Reed and he could interact with her a little bit since he is sitting up now.

We spent some time down on the river, but having the kids certainly changed our game plan from years past. Friday and Saturday afternoon we just hung out on the river bank and watched the kids get used to the cold water of the spring-fed Comal. Kate wouldn’t have ANY part of it. Reed, however, we setup in his float in the shallowest water, and he just sat there… watching everything around him, and paying no mind to the water temp or even the blazing sun. We coated him in sunscreen and stuck a hat on him and he was good to go. When we pulled him out, the poor kid had purple-ish feet and wrinkled toes, but he seemed to be just fine. Sarah and Julie did pull the “girl time” card and took off down the river to get some tubing in, leaving Jim and I with the kids.

We had a few episodes with the kids during the weekend that was a testament to the fact that these trips will never be the same again as they were when we were living the “DINK” life. However, it will only get MORE fun when Reed and Kate (and siblings) start splashing around and playing in the river like only kids know how.

Sitting Up

img_4979We started with the nanny, Kelsey, about 2 weeks ago. She speaks about as much English as I do Spanish, so it is a challenge when I don’t have either one of the other couple there to translate for us. However, she is great with the kids and took to Reed immediately. (who wouldn’t?)

Anyway, Kelsey took Reed into the play room on the first morning that Julie and I dropped him off. Without even asking what he was capable of, she set him on the ground and sat behind him. He was sitting all on his own!! Julie and I were dumbfounded because we had not even TRIED to sit him up yet, and here he was, sitting all on his own (although very wobbly still)! Needless to say we were immediately pleased with Kelsey even though she really had not done anything yet… I guess it was just a realization that allowing Reed to have other influences in his life was going to make him grow in ways that we would not have done ourselves.

Now, with this new found independence, when we set Reed on the ground, there is a good chance he is going to get SUPER excited and squeal at the top of his lungs. Most of the time it’s so bad it makes him cough. I swear he is going to lose his voice over it sometime. He is certainly more entertaining and interactive when he is sitting on his own.
